Default re-barrel a Rem 788

Who can do it and what brand of barrel? I'm interested in perhaps a 1-12" 24" sporter in .222 Rem

There is nothing special about rebarreling a 788. The main issue is having an action wrench that fits the receiver to remove the old barrel and put on the new barrel .
I have had good results with Jury barrels out of Red Deer , as well as other canadian makers .

I understand the threads are odd/stepped and require considerable machining?

There’s nothing complicated about rebarreling a 788, except they are different from the usual 700. There’s a relief in the threads in the middle of the (long) threaded shank for the front action screw.

Rem 700
Thread 1 1/16" (1.062") X 16
Engagement .69 (11 threads)

Rem 788
Thread 1" (1.000") X 20
Engagement 1.1" (22 threads)

Are you maybe thinking of the model 30?

REM 788 has standard 60 degree threads.
