Default Retriever training

Hey there, looking for some tips on training my Golden Retriever (Douglas) for upland gamebird hunting / general companion. I ordered up a copy of Tom Dokkens Retriever Training, which I'm excited to dig into with him. He's currently 5.5 months old which I know is young but I guess I'm more wondering what are some good habits to start making or breaking at this age to help him on his way, from people who have been through it. FYI I have never had a hunting dog nor do I know anybody who does or has trained them. Thank you

That’s a great book, the key is consistency, and digestibility, we have a year old lab x Brittany we adopted from a farm a few weeks ago and have been working through the same book with great success. We work on 5 things a day but in small intervals, obedience for 10 minutes then we go play, swimming for a bit, then more play, etc. it’s working wonders.

Awesome to hear it's been working for you, I just got it today so hoping to get some reading in and start putting it into action. I was thinking of bringing him to a game bird farm to start getting him comfortable.

If you can find some pigeons and a decent supply of them, that will go a long way in helping train a young dog for upland birds.

Also check out this dvd by George Hickox.

Don’t rush it, enjoy the process and you will have a hunting companion for years to come.

Will definitely check that out. Any idea where a feller might be able to get some pigeons?
