Anyone use the alaknak tent??
Looking at buying a alaknak tent for hunting and maybe overnight ice fishing trips to some of my remote lakes i fish. Has anyone used them in colder weather -30 or snowy weather. I have a deisel heaters in my ice shacks and buddy heaters so not worried about heating. Do they hold up to snow loads and do they heat well in colder -30 weather. Whats you opinions

I did a ton of research before buying my canvas wall tent. Much better against the cold and condensation. Downside is it is super bulky, heavy, and a pain to dry out and put away properly.

I bought a used 10x10 last year but haven't tried it yet, I have heard mixed reviews about it, but for me its an upgrade from my ice fishing tent, plus the price was right...

I have the 12x12 with the vestibule on the front. Need the roof protector if running a stove, but no issues so far. Nice to have the floor in the tent when camping in the summer months as well. Sets up pretty easy. It works fine in cold weather, but I would definitely run a wood stove over a buddy to keep it nice and dry inside.

had a 12x12
Sold it.
Doesn't hold heat as well, condensation is way worse than a canvas.
Heavy, and you need lots of ropes to hold it up.
Doesn't work as well with snow or ice.
Has large vents near the entry ridge you have to build a cover for, or the wind just howls into it.
Does it set up easy? Yes to a point, but my canvas square tent with a singe center pole sets up easier, and quicker, holds heat better, and lasts longer.
Also, the alaknak does not work on horses, as you need all the poles.
Not that I hated the alaknak just found my new tent way better, and I like the center pole canvas better than a trad outfitters tent.
also the alkanak will get spark holes very easy, you must use a roof protector.

I explored that tent a while back and after reading reviews and looking at the design I went a different direction. The pole and rope system along with materials I think would be ok in mild weather. I was afraid that if heavy snow loads or colder Temps that the tent wouldn't hold up ie hold heat or be strong enough.
I'm a fan of structural frames so went with a canvas and aluminum internal frame set up fr om a reputable group out of bc and happy with it for 12 month use..

Great 3 season tent. It can be used after october but it is not meant to trap in heat and release moisture (like canvas) so condensation in cold weather can be a problem. With the poles it is a bit on the heavy side. It will need to be anchored. It's a really awesome tent, imo though after having spend 100 nights in it, it is not meant for cold and snowy weather.
If you are looking for something for winter use, it is not what you are looking for.

I used a piece of tarp i cut to fit. Glued velcro to the tent and tarp piece.
It was great tent for summer and early fall. Just found it was not nearly as good for late season

I have an alaknak tent, 12x20. Love the size and layout. We only set it up where we can drive to, though, for obvious reasons.
We always set up with our wood stove in the fall and winter, and have had it out many nights down to -30. As long as the stove is running and topped up every 2.5-3 hrs, it's toasty warn. I run 2 thermoelectric heaters off the stove to circulate the warm air, I find it helps reduce the condensation significantly.
No ragretz.
