Default O.E.M rifles and shotguns

The other day i was talking to a guy about my C.I.L. 900 varmint rifle.
" That looks like an anschutz" he said.
" That's becaus it's OEM for C.I.L. by Anschutz !" I replied.
I then had to explain it to him, as he had never heard the term.
O.E.M stands for "original equipment manufacturer" for those that do not know.
many companies build rifles and shhotguns on contract for comapnies that sell them under their own name.
C.I.L. was only one of hundreds.

Mirokou is another OEM company that builds firearms for others.
ullijr once told me a storey about swithching his charles daly barrles onto a buddy's Citori action - much to his friend's chagrine, seeing how the CD is about $700 cheaper but basicly the same as the Browning!!

My son has a Mauser 76 skeet gun, but it is made by the Italian firm Gamba,
and has Italian proofs.
My tikka has Marrochi barrels, and the stock recoil pad is marked "Valmet".
Talk about an orphan kid, the chokes are made by trulok in the U.S.!!!
it took a while to figure that one out!!

Parker Hale also built many OEM rifles , do other European companies.

So, if you see a rifle or shotgun you are not sure of, check it closely, because ( as in the case of the C.I.L's) yu may end up with a super deal !

The same goes for Weatherby. They do not actually build guns, they market guns built by contractors. That vanguard is really made by Howa in Japan, and virtually the same rifle has been sold as a Smith&Wesson,a Mossberg, and a Howa, but for less money.

yup, I have a Remington that was made by the Zastava works in Serbia.
Not the smoothest action in the world but shoots well. Pretty good little rifle actually; not a surprise actually these guys have been making Mausers, Kalashnikovs and sniper rifles for the Yugoslav military since before WWII.

I think you'll see a lot more in the future as some of the old Warshaw pact weapons manufacturers have been privatized and need to look for markets.

As the UN regulations are adopted in more countries you'll also be able to tell more obviously. The new Remingtons have a ZA in the serial number.

The mark V has been made by a German company,then a Japanese company,then a U.S. company called Saco,and now a U.S. company called ATEK.

Weatherby also markets a nice little .22LR that is actuall an Anschutz 64!
The laws that the staes have are a bit confusing at times.

I beleive that there is a law that requires them to be made in the States ( or was) .
consquently, they are put together in the States, but the parts are actually made across the pond.
Anyone shed some light on this?

With a Zastava action, or a Santa Barbara?
The reason I am asking , is that the Whitworths were part of the Birmingham conglomeration ( BSA, Parker Hale, etc.) , but I think the Whitworths were slightly different , using the Chec or maybe German '98 actions. The big difference that is noticable would be the poliished bolt on the Santa Barbara - the Zastavas are usually blued methinks....
