300 WTHBY Hand Load

I'm starting to load my own 300 WTBY's. Does anyone have recomendations on powder, bullet (hunting) or overall load?

Hey Dawg,

I've been loading my 300 Weatherby Mag (Mark V ultralight) to the highest recommended charge in the Nosler manual with IMR 4831 and 180 gr Accubonds and 180 gr partitions. It groups OK with the Accubonds if the barrel is not fouled but it is not a real fast load. Chrony says 3050 ft/s avg. I picked up some slower burning powder - IMR 7828 and also some RL 19 to try. I'm sure the speed will increase but who knows what will happen in the group department. I have been really happy with the performance of both the Accubonds (1 recovered) and Partitions (3 recovered) on game. I am tempted to try the TSX if I don't get better accuracy with the different powders that I am about to try.

What are you looking to shoot with you wby?? Do you have a bullet in mind and grn of bullet?? Ive been loading for my 300bee for 7 years now, I have some good loads...

Chet, Youll love the TSX. I tried accubonds last year The best group was a light load getting 2790ft/sec. When I got them up to the 3000= ft/sec the groups went out to 2" plus. Switched over last min. to the tsx and all powders and loads shot a 1" or less. This year its time to play around with seating depths.... And Try the Berger bullets if I can find some...

I'm working on designing the ultimate elk load for the Weatherby. Probally 180g bullet. I'm looking for long range potential, hard hitting, and good penetration, combined with accuracy....


I've been looking at the accubonds, but haven't purchased any of the components yet.

I would skip right to the TSX. Im a big fan of the 168grn but I also have a great load with TSX 180grn. That shoots sub MOA all day long.

All cases Full Length Sized and Trimmed to 3.215 and tumbled with RCBS corn media

They do leave a fair bit of copper fouling so a good copper remover is a must. And keep the barerl cool as these things are screaming down the barrel

I'd also recommend trying the Barnes TSX bullets. They work really well for high velocity rounds.

I've only tried one load in a 24 in barrel 80g 7828 with 180 accubond, cci250 at 2980, not a hot load but it grouped good enough I didn't care to keep experimenting never tried a grain less or more, consult your reloading manual for up to date info as this load may prove dangerous in another rifle, Ive never had a case split and I am on number 6 use of brass.

chet give RL 25 a try, it works killer in the 300 win and i think the wtby will benefit even more. i tried RL 22 but i never could get good grouping

In my rifles,copper fouling is virtually non existent with the tsx.On the other hand,the original x and the scirocco foul terribly.

All depends on the gun, I could start a copper mine in mine after 25 shots... But its all worth it for the sub moa groups that i get out of the TSX
