Default Right gun for deer/elk in Alberta?

It's been several years since I last lived in Alberta (Calgary) and thought I should reward myself with a new rifle. Leaning towards a .270/.300 WSM but there are a number of other good choices too.
Thoughts on calibre? Finish? (synthetic vs wood), Manufacturer? Good local gunshop? To complicate things a little, I am a southpaw.

Would appreciate any thoughts you might have, recognizing I asked a lot fo questions. Cheers.

Hey Kid;
Savage has just come out with Model 14 American Classic rifle in 300 wsm. It has a nice wood stock with a removable clip in left hand action. Don't know the price but I'm sure you will get value for your money. My son owns a Savage 16 weather warrior in 7mm wsm and he loves it.
cheers!

My biased 2 cents: I just bought a Remington 700 CDL SF in 300WSM and oh baby it looks sweet and should do the trick for anything in AB (though I have a .243 and .45-70 to round things out). I can't get out to shoot it until this weekend, so cannot yet say how it shoots, but what I can tell you is that based on looks alone I have an unhealthy amount of man love for that gun

Whatever you end up buying let us know... always fun getting a new gun.

Forgot to mention - I bought this gun at Russell's on McLeod Trail and Heritage Drive, which is the shop I prefer to go to in town.

Fitting your parameters, And being a Southpaw too, I's recommend a Savage 11FL, in any of the WSM, or their longer cousin's for caliber, dont rule out the tried and true classics such as the 30'06, and even the 270Win.
Replacemnt stocks for the functional, but fugly tupperware stocks are a piece of cake, by simple doing a google for stock makers, I know of at least one in the States that ship to Canada no problem since "wooden sporting goods" are not controlled by the BATF. http://rifle-stocks.com/

Here is my 11FL 300WSM with it's laminate stock:
