Sleeping bags
As the title says. Going on a 10+ day sheep hunt next fall. Recommendations on sleeping bags and thoughts in regards to choosing a good bag at a decent value. Trying to be cost conscious but will pay for quality and longevity. Thanks folks..

Search up “outdoor vitals” on google and go from there. For the ultra lightweight down bags, they had the best price point when i was getting myself set up for backcountry hunts.

I try my liner every now and then and I hate it. I carry, wool socks, cotton long underwear and cotton t-shirt. Every time I touch nylon I sweat, cotton stops that and I’m dry at night.

Although not cheap... I rely on Western Mountaineering sleeping bags. They’re the best. I’ve tried many other brands including Feathered Freinds and Marmot, but I always go back to WM. My -7C bag keeps me warm to -10C if I’m wearing long johns and have a good sleeping mat. Like a big Agnes insulated air core. The bag weighs less than 1lb. And is the size of a Nalgene bottle almost. Ain’t cheap, but it’s the best.

I'm in the same boat, doing a 10 day mountain hunt next year. I watched Camofire and picked up a couple Big Agnes -9°C down bags at a good discount. Might be worth it to watch....

I got a great bag its called The Beast, not a back packing bag at all its heavy and big. It has a outer layer, middle layer, and inside layer depends how many liners ya like. I copied the inner layer to a better fabric following the velcro strips on the factory one and it machine washable. Great bag. Got it in a camping store in Edmonton but don't remember which one.

See for yourself. Go into a MEC and tell them you want a bag for sheep hunting.

Go into their section called “travel partners wanted” and advertise for a partner for a moose hunt....then get back to me with your findings. I know what happened when I did it but some folks need to learn things on their own.

There ya go, I even found the spot for you
https://www.mec.ca/en/gearswap/categ...ip-partners-14
Then you can search around their site and see what organizations they donate to. Notice not one is a pro hunting organization and many are anti...

Yes they support anti hunting initiatives. I don’t think brazenly but they do allocate funds to some organization(s) with anti hunting agendas.
When I shoot a ram this fall I will be wearing a huge MEC shirt with a smile while posing with it. Can’t wait!

I bought the WEX gear sleeping bag and their smaller tent as my first setup.
I bought the XL extra wide bag for -12°C. The quality is good, zippers are solid and I like the extra room around my shoulders (6'3" 200lbs). I took it to Willmore last year and it kept me really warm, but the temperature was only around 0.
The tent is great for the price, but it has a flimsy feeling to it. Which means it works, but you have to take care of it for it to last. It comes with footprint and good set of aluminium pegs as well which is great. I spend a night of rain in it and it held up nice.
I dont have much experience with other bags and tents so take this for what its worth.
The guy running the shop is really good to deal with.

Sleeping bags
If you are doing a 10-day backpack hunt, I would strongly recommend Western Mountaineering bags. Some of the best in the business.
And not to criticize Kuiu and some others too harshly, but I find that if a company offers a huge range of products for different purposes (apparel, backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, etc) those products TEND to be lower in quality or design than those companies that specialize in one type of product (Mystery Ranch- packs, WM- sleeping bags, Hilleberg- tents). Not always the case, but sometimes is.

I have a KUIU 0 degree sleeping bag. The price point was a bit of a shock even though it was on sale, but the bag is nice. I stayed plenty warm on my late October goat hunt last year. Personally on any extended hunt in the mountains I would not skimp out on a good sleeping bag.

This makes good sense. Thanks Dave99. As well thanks to the rest that have left good comments. My computer doesn't seem to want to load the wex gear site though. Not sure what's up with that.
