Another charge laid against man who allegedly killed hunting companion

The Crown has laid another charge against a man alleged to have shot and killed a hunting companion in the Bentley area.

Herbert Stanley Meister, 57, of Lacombe is now also charged with criminal negligence using a firearm in connection with the Nov. 29 shooting.

Philip Moore, 55, of Bentley was shot in the abdomen on the next to last day of the hunting season while he was hunting with three others in a heavily wooded area about 13 km west of Bentley shortly after 4 p.m.

Meister reserved his plea on the new charge and a previous charge of criminal negligence causing death while using a firearm.

A previous charge of unauthorized possession of a firearm was withdrawn earlier by the Crown.

Meister returns to court on Feb. 12 to enter a plea.

Defence lawyer Will Willms told court that he hasn’t received full disclosure of evidence gathered by the RCMP yet.

“We’re anticipating a fairly significant amount of disclosure,” Willms said.

Meister was released from custody on several conditions on Dec. 6, including $10,000 no cash deposit.

Criminal negligence causing death carries a maximum life in jail sentence and a minimum of four years in jail upon conviction

Rarely do judges every seriously prosecute for accidental hunting shootings. Anyone know otherwise?

This guy will get off...but if remorseful will have to live with this for the rest of his life.

I would have to agree, to live with the thoughts and seeing the family would be tough enough.

I don't think he's going to get off, Sun. The new charge carries a 4 year MINIMUM, and the RCMP haven't disclosed all of their evidence yet. I suspect there could be more to this story than just a 'hunting accident'.
