Default Sqeaking for cow elk

Hey guys. Have my cow elk tag good till December 21. I have permission on a couple quarter sections where I have physically seen elk before hunting season and on my trail cams. And tons of sign tracks etc. It's all trees except a couple of cut lines. I've been in there walking and sitting all season with no luck yet. I have a hoocy mama squeaker but haven't used it. U guys think it would be worth a try? All ways scared of spooking them with it.

Thanks Shawn

Sounds like you have nothing to lose if you haven't even seen them yet!!!

I have stumbled into the odd elk herd at this time of year and scattered them,,, they always became very vocal trying to regroup themselves,,, so yes, they will talk to each other now.

Calf call. I've seen cows come from a long way just to find a lost calf.

I will add, watch your back. Other things are looking for a lost calf as well.

I just keep mine on the regular chirp. I have mixed feelings about using it. I called a cow out of the bush last year with one. This year I chirped to a herd of 10. They were gone like a shot in an instant. Looks like they were "trained"

With the level of success you're having now at seeing them I'd say it's worth a shot. Don't over call though…

I found over the years that when cow elk aren't showing up the same places as the summer, it means there is still decent forage in the bush for them. Get in the bush on the skinny little trails and cut lines and you're bound to see more than sitting on the field or large cutline. They will still be in the area just not using open spaces yet. That's been my experience.

That is such good advice.....

I have been there and have the t-shirt....A few seasons ago, I was chirping for elk and I was stalked up to 30' by a foothills cougar.....I have never been so scared in my life.
Lets just say I am alive to talk about it and my head is always on a swivel everyday I am afield.

That incident changed my whole approach to hunting and also with the friends of whom I have shared it with.

Play safe and be aware of everything surrounding you, including your hike in and your hike out.

My cow tag is good til the 20th as well... With no snow, and 60 km/h winds it makes for tough hunting them.. Lots of landowners are saying the same thing - "Haven't seen many in the fields yet, and they're still up high.. Need some snow to bring 'em down..." Hope I don't end up eating the tag.. Seems like the next couple of weekends are busy...
