Default Looking for a used engine

Hello, my son's car engine has developed a severe engine knock and he is looking to replace it with a used engine. It is a 2.3L gas engine in a 2004 Mazda 3 car. This is all new to me so I am looking for some help to guide me through the process.
Any suggestions on where to source out a used engine? What would be a reasonable cost for a used engine and cost to install the engine? What type of warranty to expect? Any recommendations for someone who does this sort of work? I live between Edmonton and Camrose. Any information or thoughts on this are greatly appreciated, thanks for your help.

Phone Allwest auto 780-465-4730.
Matt or Al are on the front desk.
That place also does rr.
If there is one in the system they will find it in western canada.

If you need it hauled there. Maybe send me a message.

Then there is pick and pull. DIY

As for cost? I don't know.

I had a 350 put in my truck at Kendale several years ago.
I also had a new radiator installed at the same time.
I think it was in the $2500 Range all said and done.
If i had more time I would have attempted it myself.

Better figger out what causes the knock before throwing money at it, mebby it ain't as bad is it sounds. If it is a rod or main bearing gone out it would have seized up already.
A used engine is just that...a used engine( i never had much luck with them)
Better to get a reman long block,.. at least you get decent warranty.

Just saying

How was it diagnosed as a knock? Are you sure it's not something loose? Have you done a compression and leak down test on the motor? Did you check the plugs, brackets, try to locate the source of the knock?

Once you are certain it is the engine is done go to http://www.car-part.com/ and search by postal code. You may find some engines that are close to you. Call around a few places for quotes or if you have a few buddies with the mechanical know how and tools... a few beverages and food always help sweeten the deal.

Call Rodway Auto Parts in Edmonton and ask for Jim, 780-434-1302 if I remember correctly

Black Gold in Nisku. But the car may be a bit old for most wrecking yards. Check Kijiji, you may find a donor car for a lot less and get to hear the engine running. Start at one wrecker, they are real good at directing you to who may have what you need.

There one on Kijiji right now for $500. Ive bought several used engines, never had much of an issue. Or have this one rebuilt at a local shop. Bearings are cheap, labour should be around $1500, maybe touching 2 grand. There ya go.
