Buck vs. Doe for meat.
Why do most people think shooting a buckfor meat is better then shooting does?
Personally I fill my supplemental then usually sshoot another doe rather than a buck.
What's your opinions?

Shooting a buck doesn't take a breeder out of the herd, is probably reason #1 and has nothing to do with meat quality.
Does and young bucks are excellent meat, big stinky bucks are pretty good too.

I have always found meat off a doe to be more tender.

Does are not any better than bucks for eating IMO.

I agree to a point. I actually prefer a young buck to a lactating doe. That said, if I were hunting solely for meat I would shoot fawns exclusively.
If you know how to cook, a big buck definitely has its place in making great flavorful meals. Sadly most people don't have a clue.

Does and Fawns are much better than Bucks just like a Old Beef Bull is the worst meat for Beef. Bucks are burger and sausage here.

I would rather take a young buck than an old doe. The best meat are fawns.

The best deer meat I ever ate was a 155" wt buck I shot on November 22 2007 while he was chasing a doe.
Swollen neck but no odor and about 2" of fat on him.
Very tender and similar to elk.

Hey Duramaximus
If it isn't made into jerky ,sausage or pepperoni I won't touch it , I think it is terrible and stinks like shat when it's cooking And would take beef over deer any day 100% of the time. just my opinion ,don't be offended you can eat as much as you want

I agree with this.
I take care of my own animals from start to finish and am convinced that anyone who complains about rutted up buck can't take care of game properly. I've also been told that late season bull elk are no good to eat. Wrong. Pronghorn are gross. Wrong again. And that Moose are the best venison out there. Wrong still.
Fawn Mule Deer are as tasty as it gets, but I hate to mention that here.

What about mulie vs. whitetail (regardless of sex)? One guy I know says whitetail is much tastier, another says there is no difference.
What say you?

Now dont take this the wrong way, but what does a guy do with the meat? Do you donate it to a food bank of some sort or give it to family and friends? Other?

I love a big ole deer roast!!! After I slice it, cure it an smoke it
....and my preference is to shoot does as they taste better, I see dozens of them and next to no bucks so take that as you will.
Oh and white tail over mulie... They both make excellent chili and jerky but mule tends to give me gas.

Does are better than a late buck. Early bucks are okay thought.
Anyone that thinks otherwise should ask them selves why year steers are $1.80/lb and old "baloney bulls" Are .60 cents.

Whitetail over mulie but I don't have a lot of experience eating mule meat.
Fawn is the tenderest meat going but there's only about 25lbs of meat on them. Doe meat isn't as tender but you get twice as much of it. I haven't shot a young buck for quite some time but they are good eating like does too. If I shoot a buck it's a bigger one and they can be a little tougher than a doe but I've never found a big difference taste wise, rutting or not. I'm going to have to go with doe due to quantity/tenderness but I suppose that a young buck would be the same.

All in the Handling
Proper care of your game animal from harvest to freezer is key factor, i butcher everything i get as well as my friends and family, meat cutter by trade, proper dressing, removal of fat and other tissues which hold a distinct taste are key, i trim them up well, really like the shanks, they make some of the best soup i've had,i've found difference in game taken in the mountains compared to ranchland anaimals IMO,we eat roast, steaks and process our own sausage, pepperoni and jerky, haven't had bad review of any so far,how you cook it makes differnce as well, Good Hunting to all Peter Wild game makes up the bulk of our freezer supplies this time if year, love it

I've been fortunate enough to have killed an elk for the last several years in a row now. I can't remember the last time my wife has bought a beef roast from the store or hambuger etc.(She was raised on a large cattle ranch). I'm raising my little family on elk and we love it. Deer is good for sausage and jerky in my opinion.
