6.5-284. Great rifle to shot, easy to be accurate which is most important to me!!
And if I'm in big bear country I'll have spray on my hip any day of the week.

15 years of using 7mm R.E.M. With 8 different types of bullets never could see a difference in killing potential from 150-175 grain and I do have a 30-06 that doesn't get out much.

It depends how good of a shooter are you and how much you practice.
People tend to practice more with easy available and cheaper calibers.

Which calibers are the cheaper ones?

Since I have found a hand load recipe for my 300 WBY mag that shoots long and groups tight, this has been my go to gun, chambered in a mark V ultra light. The back up is a 280 REM

I shoot a Browning BLR in .308. As a lefty, the lever is great and has added bonus of rapid follow up shots, if necessary.

The Fusions in 165g work real well for me. I use it on whities and mulies, but wouldn't hesitate to use it on larger game, as I'm confident in the energy it carries.

I think my combination is a good all-round setup.

Right now using a savage.270 that was a gift...and so started the addiction. Didn't buy meat last year, not buying meat again this year. I'm really learning to appreciate this round although I'm considering moving to a 308 for greater bullet weight selection. However that said, I think Ive settled on My next gun Being a civil war mountain howitzer...I've been inspired.

I use 308 and am happy with it, but i doubt you would notice a difference between availability or price between those two calibers. 308 and 270 are pretty even. 270 zips barely lighter 130 to 150 gr bullets faster, and 308 has heavier 150 to 180 gr bullets slower. Both these have effectiveness from deer up to moose. Recoil and killing power are a match. Beyond 250 meters you have to know your holdovers on both.

Some guns like Military semi-autos are more common in 308 so if you only want one ammo type, 308 is a good choice, if that doesnt concern you, 270 is just as sweet.

Default 6.5x55

I own bigger stuff but when I go afield I always reach for my 550 6.5x55... Everything that I've pointed it at just dies - 140 Nos AB's. I havent had to shoot anything twice with it yet from WT-Moose (knock on wood - knocks on forehead) from 0-300 yards it's like an extension of my arm.

45+ years of experience leads to my thoughts on this:

1. Deer: 270 Win or 270 Weatherby Magnum. Hunting area parameters make the decision. Close (300 yards) in, 270, long range wide open, the WeeBee.

2. Black Bear: Same as deer. Usually 270 as most shots are reasonably close.

3. Sheep: Although I have killed them with both the 270 Win and 300 Weatherby, my nod goes to the uber flat shooting 270 Weatherby Magnum. Light, and Deadly to extreme range.

4. Moose: 300 Weatherby Magnum. Face Plant every single time. Taken them with everything from a 25-06 to a 375. The 300 WeeBee gets my nod as best overall performer.

5. Elk: Either the 270 or 300 Weatherby Magnums. Both provide excellent long range performance yet sacrifice nothing for closer range shots.

All of that said, I will use the same crossbow (Excalibur Matrix 380) for any and all on this list

Cheers,
Nog

Only 36 years experience for me, and I pretty well use the same. My 2 primary hunting rifles are a 270 Weatherby and a 300 Weatherby. Both Sako's.

Most of my hunting has been done with a 300 Weatherby. I've owned 4 different ones over the years. It will handle anything you might encounter over most of the globe. But so will a lot of others. The 300 is my favorite however.

Taken some game with two different 7RM's, I then switched to a kimber Montana in 338 win mag and like shooting it better. Coyotes, whitetail does n bucks, a stone sheep, a bighorn sheep, a handful of elk and moose all with handloaded 210 ttsx over the last 8 years. Distances from 60 yards to 320 yards it works well. I picked up a model 84L classic select chambered in 270 win , so far I have got a couple of bucks and an elk with handloaded 140 accubonds. I like to use my 338 the most, but the little 270 is growing on me.

For the last 13 or so years my 270 wsm and the 140 accubonds have been my go to for dam near everything. Antelope to moose. I have to admit I owned both the 280 Remington and the 7mm Rem and they found new homes. I have soft spots for the 7x57, the 30-06 and the 300 win mag however and now that I look at my gun cabinet the 325 wsm, 35 whelen and 375 h and h are slowly taking over my need for smaller calibers. Had great results with the 325 wsm in Africa. the 35 whelen is gonna be seeing the timber this year for moose elk deer and bear with the 225 grain accubonds. If I was ever stuck with just relying on one cartridge to look after all my hunting it would be the 300 win mag. My beat up old abolt with a hand loaded 180 failsafe just works!

RMR in 7mm Rem Mag is the main go to now, kimber in 7mm/08 for fun sometimes, and every now and then I will dust off the .25-06's.

Default Goto guns

My goto gun is a Carl Gustaf 30-06 with a Minox HD scope. It has served me well for many decades. My magnum is a SHR 970, leupold vx3 Long range with a walnut stock in 300 WM. Both extremely accurate shooters.

Go to the last few years is my Winchester 1885 in 405 Win or 375 H&H. Or my Black powder cap and ball. Also have taken my scopes off and gone to vernier or peep sights if you like. After 35 years of the same old gun and scope, I am trying to get up and personal with big game now and find hunting to be fun again. Of courses I have seen the butt end of an animal dash into the bush a few times, but the chase was worth the loss.

You guys are all wrong except olguts. 338 win mag was where it's at. Now 338 rum takes the cake. Just kidding by the way. Lots of good choices for their go to's.

35 years hunting, best guess be 100+/- big game animals(deer, moose, bear, elk in that order)....I'd guess 70% of those taken with 30-06(all but 3 with Rem 760 pump)....small handful of deer taken with other centerfires including another 30-06 bolt that I picked up along the way,and the rest with compound bows, shotguns,BP cap and flintlocks.....I guess you could say I like my ol' ought-six pump, lol.
That said, new found interest in LR shooting and LR hunting to a lesser extent,(I'd like to build skill and confidence to ring 1000 yard gongs 1st round coldbore and 700yd elk/deer?)...been bit by the magnumitus bug....settled on the .300WSM for the cartridge, still deciding on my perfect rifle?
At the end of the day,in 35 years and 100 animals I've attempted exactly 3 shots over 300 yards with longest being 350ish,2 deer and a moose, held on the spine and smoked em all dead centre chest with the '06.
Do I need a magnum 700 yard elk thumper?Hell no,I just want one and will likely never "have to" take a 500+ yard shot,in fact,I'd have to purposely set out to do so,abondoning my preferred style and habitat of big woods stillhunting for more open country glassing.I'm sure I could spend the rest of my days in ignorant bliss, filling the freezer with the ol'06.....but if I get good enough and confident enough at this LR gong ringing,I spose live targets at 70% distance isn't unthinkable?

I'm curious what you use in your Whelen. I have a load for 225 sierras with RL15 but IIRC the velocity is around 2400. It is a very accurate load but not a particularly zippy load. Wondering what you like and have had success with.

I've been using a .308 (7.62x51 NATO) since 1974 when I cut my teeth on the FNC1 7.62 rifle while in the forces. The round is very accurate and has never given me a reason to change to another cartridge. I reload using 155 hornady rounds and never had an issue putting my deer down.

Default caliber choice

If I had one for anywhere in the world; 375 HH
Just recently bought another 338 wm, and my .358 nm is still good to go. Always will be a big advocate of heavey, well constructed bullets.
The only time I found fast, supersonic to be an advantage, was when I shot my bighorn. By the time the ram fell of a cliff, and the damage from the bullet, It saved a whole bunch of labor hauling edible meat off of the mountain.
I even shot my cougar with a .458#2, and dragged the ccs off of the mountain and made it into great marinated roasts. Bullet damage was nill.

7mm rem mag all day! Unless my shots are 350 yards and under then 3006 sometimes gets brought out!
