I just got back yesterday. I was able to harvest a 5x5 bull elk. My recommendation would be to go into the NWA and put some km's on your boots. I was talking with the range patrollers who are allowed to drive around that area and they said that the ones that are in there are all bedding down. Which is exactly what we found. We were walking in on a black track in the NWA and jumped 2 bulls and a cow laying down in some low ground. They also told us that alot of the Elk aren't herding up like they usually do. Having said that, you can still stumble on some pretty large herds of 300+ heads so I've been told.
We spent the first day trying our luck in the main part of the training area. We didn't have any luck in there. Saw lots of monster mule deer and a bunch of antelope though. We did alot of walking in a few different area's, so we didn't cover as much ground as if we had been driving around all day.
The second day we weren't lucky enough to get into the NWA once again. So we walked through the south NWA that they opened to any hunter, with the same pack in, pack out rules applying. We put 10+ km's in that day and didn't see anything. Although, we did find a carcass of a recent kill, so there were bulls in there. We also saw tons of sheds from some monster bulls. We were in the north east portion of that area.
The 3rd day we managed to get into the NWA and that's where I shot my bull. We jumped 2 bulls and a cow. Then when I was trying to locate them again using a cow call 3 more bulls came over a hill.
So I guess what I'm saying is that they are in there. I'm assuming that since you started the hunt today you're looking for cows?
Good luck on your hunt!
