Default Shot a buck with prior bullet wound

I shot a buck last night with a palm sized wound on the back of his neck. Looks like somebody grazed him. He looked healthy alive and seems healthy now (besides being dead). I am not too concerned because the wound seemed to be well on its way to healing and no sign of infection but just curious how some of you guys would deal with that? I have discarded the meat around the back of the neck just to be on the safe side.

Default Wound animal

I'd check the lymph nodes, not just beside the wound but the rest of the body too. If close to the wound they aren't swollen you're fine, if they are swollen and also swollen at other sites it indicates a wider spread infection and I wouldn't eat it.

Im not that familiar with the anatomy of the deer to be honest... Would you be able to tell me where I could find the closest lymph nodes and what to look for?

No guarantee it is a bullet wound as well. Not many people try neck shots on bucks so could have been from fighting another deer or a variety of other hazards in the bush.

Default Wounded Deer

How fresh did the wound look? What zone did you shoot this guy in? My buddy wounded a buck a couple weeks ago, never was able to find him. Wonder if by chance this was the one.

It was a whitetail buck, hard to say how fresh but guessing about 3 weeks old. Its right outside of WMU 212.
