Default 300 h&h

I am now the owner, of a Ruger #1 in 300H&H,
I am on the hunt for, a lighter weight ammo, I have 180 gr on the way, any one seen any 150-165 gr,
Also, as yet to find dies.
Very nice wood, and with irons and Zeiss 3x9.
really want to go give it a try,

I also have one and love it. One of favourite rifles ever.

I have only used 180gr reloads with Hornady SP and TSX's so far. 64gr of H4350 ignited by Fed215's gives me around 2850fps with the Hornday SP's and 2900fps with the TSX's. Not 'hot' but plenty of jam for my needs, not high pressure and right around MOA accuracy with no modifications done to the foreend hangar.

I might try some 150gr TTSX's that I have but with that case capacity I see no reason to shoot lighter bullets, I have a .308 to take care of that!

I also would like to try some RE22 but to be honest the H4350/180gr TSX load is prime for hunting and the 180gr SP's are good for practice, so my motivation to experiment has waned a little!

One thing I noticed is that my No1 has a short throat. I cannot load either of the bullets that I listed at SAAMI max OAL without them being well into the rifling at that point.

You will battle to find a variety of factory ammo, it really is a reloader's cartridge and factory premium ammo is ridiculously expensive.

i have a custom model 70 in this calibre im using 62 gr of imr 4350 with a 180 gr sierra gameking ......2805 fps(lots more room for power but this is its accuracy load almost 1/2 moa at 100 ) ...... if you lived closer to me we could work on some hand loads , i will keep an eye out for factory ammo for you but i think 180 is its standard loading ........and or maybe 200 gr ........ very expensive to buy factory though..........

sinclairs should be able to send you the dies or any numerous usa gunstores ......if you cant source some out this side of the border. brass is hard to find...... try calling bashaw sports ..... they had once fired..... a while ago

Thanks Kayaker, that is good info you have provided.
I just want to dial it in for now. It came with scope, but I have no idea, what ammo was used.
Hopefully today, I can make it to the range.

I forgot:

For dies I just use Lee Collet dies. I also bought a Lee FL sizer for new brass or for when the cases get a little tight in the chamber - the single shot can be sensitive to this as it lacks the camming power of a bolt.

The dies are available from Titan reloading online. The will ship to Canada regular post for about $10. If the .300H&H dies are not visible online just email them, they will have them or will get them for you.

The only factory ammo I have seen in EDM is Nosler with Accubonds (they were either 180 or 200gr) and HSM. The Nosler was silly expensive and the HSM, I think, had Bergers, which I dont want.

Hornady brass is around at various stores, last I saw was $75/50 at P&D and I saw some Wolverine in Red Deer too but I have bought over 180 cases already on the CGN classifieds so take a look there.

I had a ring round Edmonton, P&D have hornardy and Federal, and wholesale have two different Nosler loads,
That will get me rolling, with brass and sighted in, all 180 gr, nothing else.

Well, got out and fired a few rounds,, Nice....
But we do seam to have the typical ruger drift, after things get warm, away to the right after 6-7 shots, fired in a row. fired another four shots from cold Barrel and every one was with in an inch at 100m, 2" high at 100m.
happy with that. Hornardy 180 bonded..
Now to play with hand loads.

That sounds great! Can't really fault a stock no 1 if it strings shots after 6 or 7. It sounds like yours is accurate too.

I have never really cared for smaller magnums but the .300H&H is just such a classic!
