Default Grouse hunting in -20?

Got a day off coming and wanting to go out again.... Will it be too cold? Edmonton weather is predicted to be -25C in a morning warming up to -20C daytime. It probably gonna be even colder out west.
Should we stay or should we go? What are the chances of seeing birds along those roads? Never been hunting birds in this temp before, so just need your expertise!

I'd go out. You're not likely to see any sitting at home. Just make sure you're prepared for the elements. If you go let us know how it went!

Sitting home I won't see any for sure, LOL! As for the weather, it doesn't scare me, at least yet... I do have warm clothing and a thermos with a hot tea should help also. The only question is this: where should I be looking for the birds? Under the shrubs/trees on a shoulder of the road or deeper inside the woods? On a ground or sitting on a trees? If they will start flushing, I will need a shotty and not a 22. Not sure what to be prepared for.

It's not the heat, it's the humidity. . . .

In the colder temps they'll be packing in the Aspen buds in the evenings, concentrate on the tree tops of young aspen trees,

Thank you for the info! What about during the day? Where should I be looking?

Watch for them on the sunny slopes, they will hang there quite a bit of the day.

Only ever did it once at -20, West side of Okanagan lake about 40 years ago. It was a most magical day - the newly formed ice on a beaver pond was singing, you got it, positively musical notes.
I got one Spruce grouse and one Ruffed grouse but the magic of singing ice is the thing that sticks in my mind.

KGB ..

I have done it lots

any day in the woods is fun

..just be ready for any thing (break downs etc )

I find that the grouse are either roosted or under pine/spruce

I like driving at under 30km on lease roads looking into forest(moving ground blind)

south facing tree line can be very productive

4X4 low range 1st gear is deadly ..ask the rabbits. . lmao

as you play this game more your eye's get accustomed to shape/color

its so much fun because you never know what else you see

enjoy your trip and if you get some its a bonus

oooopppss for the troll's ...get out and shoot

David

Thanks Speckle! You are my hero, LOL!!!!
Will be going out for sure, well prepared and dressed for the weather. Planning on walking a bit too, will try to get into deeper wooded areas with a small aspen/poplar trees. Got 2 buddies with me, one with a shotgun in case we flush them. Should be a fun day out!
