Default Zone 308

Looking to go into the whale back this year and have been doing some reading on the area. I have been hunting all around it for years but never that particular zone. I am just wondering how the zone is for those on foot. Also how far back do you usually go. I know most people like to ride in but that's not an option this year. What's the game like in there in regards to size and numbers. Deer and elk are what I'm after this year. Planning a few weekends with the boots on to check it out but any advice is appreciated!

I hunted 308 accessing from highway 22. I also hiked many times accessing from the south end. I have seen some decent elks and a few moose. My son and I harvested a white tail out of there last fall. If you harvest something big out there it may be difficult to get it out. The terrain is good but it’s a long way back to the truck. Last time I was there I saw a sign for “Horse Services” and I should have taken the number.

If you access from the 22 you can expect to have to hike a minimum of a few Ks.

Lots of walking up and down hills (montanes)...beautiful country though. One downside is that you can't camp in the staging area so you can't set up base camp unless you want to pack a tent and all in on foot. I learned why quads or horses are the norm.

If you get something on foot there it will be a looooong pack out. It can be done but be prepared for days of hiking if you have to pull an elk out on foot by yourself.
