Default 132 year old Winchester found leaning against a tree.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/m...ree/?tid=sm_fb.

Now that would make a very cool wall hanger.

It seems odd to me that the gun would have no ammunition in it. I mean, to be out in the middle of no where with an empty rifle 132 years ago, I don't think that happened often.

Maybe they'll ring date that tree.

huh that is a really good point i'm not a tree guy but do little trees like that age out at 150+ years. because it had to be about that size when the rifle got leaned on it or else it would have fallen over as it grew or maybe wasn't big enough to lean a rifle on

That 73 was left by someone who got off the wagon for a nature call, by the time they got to California, the gun and Grampa were gone.

There was a story of a 94 Winchester grown into the crotch of a tree, west of Rocky, once.

The article says the rifle is 132 years old. Doesn't mean it was sitting there for 132 years from new. Maybe it's only been there for 50 years?

Article says juniper tree.
And to correct myself, the article says that the gun appears to have been there for more than 100 years. Interesting find

The oldest known tree in the world is not near as big as you'd think.

trees that can grow in almost inhospitable places-such as the Nevada desert-usually grow very very slowly. Furthermore a lot of conifers just keep growing until something kills them, they don't really die of old age, so as far as I know the Juniper is potentially a hundred years old or more.

Dang! Always wondered what I did with the old Winchester and why I had to walk home.
