You can acess the lake from Mission hill road and fish off the winter road like most people are doing right now.

What is brutal about it? To much snow, lots of ridges, or water and ruts?

On the lake right now with a snowmobile. No issues getting around, aside from things being rough due to the thaw and freeze.

Fishing has been a bit slow, but a couple decent ones at least. A 26” and a 27”. Still looking for that 30” through the ice here.

I still need to break the 30” mark there. That’s the pursuit anyway.

30" is a big walleye. But you're on the fish so it's usually a matter of time...sometimes lots and lots of time. Good luck.

Default Lac la biche lake

You’re fishing a lake that could give you a 30” walleye at any time. Good luck, I’m doing my best to do the same one day.

Planning to fish by the Sir Winston Churchill PP this coming week. Any info on the status of access at that location would be very helpful.

We will have 3 families in cabins next weekend at the park.
I think we are going to bring a quad and see how that goes.
I was wondering if we would need an auger extension.
Never ice fished at LLB before. Any info on access and ice thickness would be greatly appreciated.

It was getting close to extension time a couple weeks ago, mainly because of the crusty snow, thin ice layer, and then flood water layer before the actual thick ice.

I was using a sled, but I think you should be fine with a quad unless they got a bunch of snow since I was there last.

Be prepared to move around. My experience has been an area is good for one or two aggressive fish, and then you need to move to get a few more. I’ve yet to find an area to “camp out” and consistently catch fish.

Thanks for the info.
I’ll have to go get an extension then. Just to be safe.

I am at the cabins for the next 2 days. I brought a quad. No to bad as it has crusted over with this cold weather. Did not have to use an extension on the ice auger there is about a foot of snow where you could shovel and not have to use an extension but good to have one just in case. Got the ATV too close to the cabins where the snow is deep and got stuck spent an hour shovelling to get it out somehow forgot about deep snow along the banks won’t make that mistake again this week. There are vehicle tracks at the boat launch going out on the ice but it looks a bit hairy I personally wouldn’t take my truck there at this time.

Anyone still fish for and catch perch on the lake? That use to be the big draw there for years.

perch has been pretty much not existent for 10 years plus now. Walleye have taken over and the big pike are pretty much gone the odd one

I was fishing there on Saturday and the nice gentleman beside us happened to catch one, maybe 8" long. First one I have seen caught in a long time.

The perch are starting to make a slight comeback. As mentioned, nothing of size. The betting studies show they are slowly coming back.

2022 netting study 429 perch
2018 netting study 195 perch
2016 netting study 16 perch
2015 netting study 33 perch

So they are making a bit of a comeback. It’s a far cry from what it once was though.

Anybody out recently by the provincial park that can give an update on ice conditions? We're heading up this weekend and was wondering whether getting around in a truck was possible. Also, whether an extension was needed for the auger.

I have heard its bad getting around except spots that get fished lots. The causeway out front should be fine with people going to their shacks. Poplar point and along the super highway should be good too. Most of the Lake wont be to accessible. Let us know how the conditions are I am thinking of going next week also.

Lots of snow here. Apparently snowed all night last night to early afternoon today. 6 inches fresh snow on top of 6-8 inches of soft crust on top of ~24 inches of ice. Nearly needed an extension for the auger.

Fishing was slow tonight. Lost one at the hole and no other bites. Only one other group out near us and sounded like they only caught a couple. Hopefully things pick up tomorrow.

Also, we walked on. Seemed chancy for anything other than ATV/snow machine.

Driving on looked like a nightmare for those who tried. Must have seen 5-6 cars and trucks taking turns getting stuck ~100 yards from the launch.

Overall slow weekend, but some of that may have been because we stayed close to the cabins and didn't feel like hauling our gear that far on foot. Iced 5 good sized pike, lost probably another 5 along the way. No walleye bites. Lots of little perch marked on the sonar.
