the southern res are the best fishing you will find in the province for size and numbers if you spend enough time on the water , its a learning curve but once mastered you will never be skunked or disappointed .

Not to be rude but some guys naturally "stink" and fish won't bite their offerings. Had a buddy that was like that so I would usually tie on his lures and put his bait on until we found a soap that helped him. Cant remember what it was but if you could find berkleys hand wash it worked for him too.

You might be on to something there. I had a pike nose right up to my lure yesterday and turn away in disgust at the last second. He xam back another 2 tines but still not interested. Maybe I should try putting a bit of scent on it or summin?

That's right, I am still struggling with fishing, but still undeterred!

True story. Avoid any flower scented oily products on your hands unless it smells like cheese or garlic haha

Make your bait look wounded, rip it's belly out so it flaps... If a pike noses it, drop to bottom and bump it couple of times off the bottom and then let it sit. Not sure how deep you're fishing (6 max IMO, prefer shallower). Try not stomping about or crunching above.. a friend is a terrible fisherman on the ice as he just paces and stomps his feet for warmth.

Rehashing an old post here, but for good reason. I wanna thank everyone for their input. I had a great ice fishing season in the end when I finally figured it out (bait, who knew?) Anyway, here's some snaps. No monsters but I'm more than happy

Now I will be concentrating on spring bear, shed hunting and looking forward to ice-off pike fishing

I've never fished the southern reservoirs but I'll debate the best fishing in aberta statement. I fish the bonnyville to llb to cold lake area mostly and it's been years since I've had a skunk and we typically get 20+ 40" pike a year and lots of 26-28" walleye with the odd bigger one. Plus we have cold lake which is a top notch fishery.
This time of year I catch a ton of big pike on a 3/8oz jig and minnow on the deep side of a steep break from a big shallow sand flat. 14-20fow type thing just off 4-8fow. Lots of times I'll pick them up suspended as they swim off the flat.

This is my 2nd season ice fishing. I sucked at it last year. Got a few but nothing that got me excited. This season I spent alot of time reading the forums, picking the brains of the anglers at the local shops, made friends on IG and got lots of tips. This season I can't keep them off my lures & bait. There is so much valuable info in this thread alone - all of which I've applied and it works. Last week my buddy and I were having no luck and then he switched the color of his lure and he started pulling up walleyes. I switched immediately to the same color and I started reeling them in too. The other day I was targeting pike and watching them approach my lure on the flasher was showing me that they didn't care much for me aggressively jigging. I slowed down my jigging and suddenly I was getting em. I'm having a fantastic season and caught my first bull trout too! The learning has begun... Keep at it and pay attention to the details (ie. time of day, condition of bait, temperatures, presentation, etc.)

Awesome to see the success happening for those that were having a tough start to the season!

When does a walleye morph into not being a walleye?
That thing has laker blood in it!

Wind is not a factor up here except Cold Lake and a couple of the other larger lakes. So if it's a windy day I have a dozen other lakes at minimum to choose from. Pretty much never kept off the water. Plus I have this nice little creek that basically runs through my back yard that produces some nice fish as well. Less than a 10 minute ride from my door.

Don't get me wrong....those south reservoirs are great fisheries.....but there's a ton more fishable water up here that produce high quality fish and a lot of the lakes we fish will see 1-10th the pressure. A dozen boats is a busy day.
