Antlered Mule Deer 151

Hey guys just looking for some advice on a mule deer tag that I was drawn for recently in 151. I have never hunted any southern Alberta areas as I am from the Northeast so any advice appreciated. This will also be my first Antlered Mule deer hunt!

Is there any crown land down in the southern WMU's? Should I start getting permissions now for hunting on private land? Also which areas in 151 have the best chance of success? Been putting in for 4 years so looking to get a decent animal if possible.

i put in for goat/antelope/bison/turkey in places i've never hunted

That kind of statement really makes me wonder who the "genius" is here....

He's had 4 years putting in for it and never even picked up a map or googled the Zone? Like common man sure I'm all for learning new spots go pick up map look at regs what's open and start putting miles on boots.

hunted near bindloss for the last few years. saw good numbers of mulies and wt along the river. no monster mulies but lots of 3x3s and smaller 4x4s. there are good deer in that zone, just gotta find them. look for draws and valleys to hunt. get a landowner map and call landowners now as the place gets lots of hunters. some landowners will only let a certain amount of hunters on each year. once they hand out 20 or so permissions they stop giving permission. CWD is in the area we hunted. we got 4 positives in two years with my hunting party. something to consider as well.

Agreed...LEARNING being the key point. Dont learn much getting handouts. Its a 3-4yr wait for a tag there, if this year is a swing and a miss do it again in 2021 and you'll know alot more than you did this time.

If it were me, I'd be scouting out places to launch and pull out

I'd go early November and float the river. Should still be open that time of year and would be an awesome hunt. Some of those Islands would probably hold some great deer!
I am sure there is a bit of Grazing Lease land as well you could easily get on.

I don't think there is an issue with people helping out with the logistics of the hunt. The problem is when guys ask specifics of where to hunt and where the big critters are.
I was pushing the limits asking for more than I should with my ewe tag but in my defence I was asking not because I can't do it all myself but because I have a 12 year old girl who is the one that is going to do the hunt not me.
I can hike 15 miles in there and get it done on my own easy enough but why not get some help if guys are willing to help out and get some ideas if there is something closer for her. And the fact it is a ewe and 9 year wait myself I would have no issues at all if someone asked me for help. A ram is a different story....

As for the Buffalo hunt thing. Ya I need some ideas from guys. It's a 10 hr drive just to get there. I have no idea where to stay and it's a once in a lifetime chance to get the tag. Why wouldn't guys give some feedback on what works?
Once is a lifetime kind of tags there are a lot of guys willing to help out. I would too and will be offering my thoughts after we are done the hunt so others can be successful. I doubt we will ever get the draw again so what will it hurt to spill the beans?
It's a little different than asking what zone is full of monster moose and which farmer to ask for permission. At least that is my thoughts on it.

Actually Nube since elk opened everyone and their dogs have been pounding the river. That used to be the staple. Glass from one side and go hunt.
Times have changed.
Big boys hang on the flats where there is no fence for a mile or so.
Sucks with foot only access but can be done.

Those big deer will still be there but good info. Prepare to get hammered for giving some info lol
I got Priority 11 and will be in Kyrgystan next year but after that I will be looking to get a good one. I doubt I will have it figured out where by then either so who knows when I will go lol

Asking to get some info doesn't hurt I don't think and this area is almost 8hr drive from where I live so not the most economical to just go for a drive and scout the area. So this year will be the first year I am hunting the area yes. I mean you can't say that everyone wasn't in an area for there first time ever, we all start somewhere guys remember that. And thanks to the people actually willing to offer some helpful advice.

Had a successful hunt down south! Thanks for all the help from the AO members I was able to connect on a good first mule deer.

First day of the hunt was mainly scouting the areas I had looked at from google maps, some were good some were bad as usual. At very last light of that day I glassed a decent buck from about a mile off only got 30 seconds but I could tell he was a good deer. The next morning was horrible hunting conditions with blinding blowing snow you could barely see 100 yards. Ended up spotting a 150 class whitetail in a flat spot and stalked him to within 100 yards but didn't pull the trigger after a better look (I'm ruined for whitetail from a previous deer I have shot). After some talking with my father back in the truck he decided he wanted to try his hand at finding that whitetail so we walked into the wind over a couple coulees and spotted some mule does bedded down. We proceeded to back off and use the hill as cover working our way around. I then belly crawled 10 yards to the crest of the coulee and immediately spotted this buck bedded down, after a quick look I figured he was the deer we saw the night before and his left side looked like what I was wanting in a deer (I suck at field judging mulie). Ranged him through the blizzard at 260 yards an let the 270wsm bark, he was down. Couldn't be happier with the hunt even though I tagged out alittle early on the morning of the second day! Some ground shrinkage after I made my way over to the deer as his one back fork was lacking and I didn't see that, but leaves me room for improvement none the less and a life time of memories with my dad. He grosses 174" if anyone is wondering. Not a bad first mulie I don't think.
