I agree with your idea on ethical ranges but I find myself hunting with folks who can't estimate the range from the couch to the TV let alone how far a deer is so when I pull out my Leica and tell them that the deer is 450 yards not 300 there is no doubt.

I use a Leupold RX1200i, has a nice red display, ranges out past a thousand yards on critters if your hand is still enough(tells me how many hundreds of yards closer I need to get), it gives you wind holds and round specific ballistic calculations for elevation holds. Also has angle comp and archery mode which gives you 0.1 yard readings.
