Default Black Bear Shot Placement

Hi all,

I'm gearing up for my first black bear hunt this spring, and reading wildly conflicting information on where the vitals are in a black bear. HALF the articles I read say "the lungs are further forward than a deer", and HALF say "the lungs are further backward than a deer". Which is it???

Here is an article that says the lungs are further forward:
http://arbear.org/hunting/recovery-1...-on-black-bear

And here is an article that says the lungs are further backward:
https://www.wasparchery.com/blog/whe...ear-with-a-bow

Any experienced black bear hunters care to weigh in?

TIA!

Edit: I should add, I'm hunting with a rifle. I should also add, I found the other thread on this topic and it didn't seem like there was consensus, thought I would try again.

With enough gun and at close range anywhere in chest cavity, black bear will not go very far with 2" exit hole in his side.

If possible a high shoulder shot for me. I'm hunting in rugged ,steep country. They need to drop. Good luck

the one that has it further back looks odd to me. I tucked my shot right behind the front leg last year and obliterated the lungs.

edit: a guy in the further back post put up a link to another site which shows how they have the vitals too far back. not sure what those guys were smoking but they are way out to lunch of the anatomy of a bear.

Default Black bear

The best overall killing shot, is high on the shoulder, breaking the shoulder blades, they drop in there tracks--I have skinned or help skin over 300.
I favour the 12 ga slug for tree stand hunting, Most of the regular caliber rifles good, as always its about shot placement.

Try put it through both shoulders, they won't go far.

My .308 dropped my old sow right in her tracks without a peep after putting one high in her shoulder from around 60 yards.

Thanks everyone. I'm using a 30-06 with 180 grain AccuBonds. I'll go for either a high shoulder or a more forward lung shot. I've heard enough of you say forward, not back, plus I found a page in a book by Mr. Steven Rinella saying the same thing.

Appreciate the feedback! If I'm honest I expected to get roasted for this post. Thanks for your help everyone.

Cheers.

I always just centre punch them vertically, and inline with the front leg. Bow or rifle.

Not at all, one of the best calibers of all time, with a deadly bullet---No tracking blood trail. load em on my plastic sled, back to camp for processing---You get a hand shake and hug, for good gear, and perfect execution.

It will obviously depend on the angle at which the shot presents itself. If you are talking broadside, I have never had a problem hugging the front shoulder, and holding no more than halfway up the body. I've seen a lot of bear succumb to a simple ho-hum lung shot. I generally try to hit them again too if I have the chance.

I Don't know why anyone wants to shoulder shoot a bear? To much room for error!
seen WAY to many get away specially when shot with shotgun slugs.
halfway up and tight behind the front leg will have em down in less than 50 yards

Rifle will bust the shoulders and drop them in their tracks however that is the worst shot with a bow. Bow aim a couple inches behind the back of front leg if broadside and if slightly angled away 6-8 inches back of front leg mid way up body
