Would this create a slight buzz? Yes lol but by law, you can carry a non restricted rifle with you in public. It’s when you leave the gun unattended and unlocked in plain sight is where the laws kick in. Without stating “why” you have it in your boat, legally you should be ok.
Please note I wouldn’t agree to walking around in public with one to be “that” guy.
If anyone has proof, such as written laws from the queens printer that say other wise please correct me.

About 8 years ago I was in Wholesale Sports in Calgary at the gun counter waiting for my number to be called. One of the clerks was showing a guy in a cowboy hat a 12ga coach gun with hammers. A guy standing next to me also waiting for his number to be called said to no one in particular, "That's a neat looking shotgun," I told him it is used in cowboy shooting. He said that the only gun he ever shot was his service pistol. I asked him if he was Calgary Police, he replied that he was.

We got chatting and he said, "Remember when you used to be able to carry rifles in the back window of your pick-up?" I said yes, and you still can. He said no you can't. I said yes you can if you have a valid PAL and the firearms are unloaded, you can have them in the back window of your truck. However, if you leave your vehicle, they must be taken down out of the window be made so that they cannot be seen from the outside, lock your doors and you can leave your vehicle. He said no you can't. I just thought to myself, "Here is a cop that doesn't know the regs."

Now having said that, I would not drive down the Deerfoot with long guns in the back window of my pick-up, because you would see the smoke from the 911 call centre with the lines being overloaded with people calling in, saying that there is a crazy guy driving down the Deerfoot with a bunch of guns in his back window. If you were coming in from the north, you probably wouldn't make it past the 64th st overpass before the Calgary Police Tac Team would be all over you.

There have been too many instances where the police have harassed people legally transporting firearms, because the police do not know the regs.

I'm not saying I need 1 there, just wondering. The topic came up talking about seal ions. We used slingshots in LA to keep them away from bait.

I would bet good money that well over half the police force in Canada would think it’s against the law to display guns in the back window while driving.

The short answer is no.

From what I could skim through in the Firearms Act, Transport Canada, the criminal code, marine acts, etc.

The same laws apply on water as on land.

If you can’t have it in your car, you can’t have it on your boat.

I don’t have a specific link Ken to say nay, but I’m confident that is the answer.

We carry firearms on boats all the time, travelling to and from hunting areas on the Peace, Chinchaga, Hay and Athabasca rivers. As far as coastal waters go, it would be irresponsible to leave your firearms in your vehicle while absent on your boat. Of course, you'd want to keep them safe from thieves.

(Now somebody's probably going to chime in and tell me to "Prove there are thieves in Prince Rupert!")

Lastly, the Criminal Code does not exist to spell out what you can do, it exists to spell out what you can't.

In todays ever more restrictive society, you better know where you stand with firearms law, and be prepared to defend yourself against countless police officers who don't - and especially those who think they can make it up as they go along. We now live in a time when "To Serve and Protect" has degenerated into "To Fine and Collect".

Yeah, sometimes it’s best not to go kicking hornets nests.

“...and what’s your name, address, and SIN, sir?”

“....and where are your firearms right now, sir?”

“....oh, you hear helicopters and sirens approaching? Don’t worry, sir, just come out with your hands on top of your head for your safety and ours.....”

Yeah, I’m exaggerating....but I’d rather stay real invisible, thank you.

My favourite quote from the Dalai Lama reads “It’s very important to know the law so one can break it correctly.”

I have a couple Police reports proving there are thieves in Rupert. They got a very nice 20" Rigid combo LED dual row. Insurance was nice enough to upgrade me to the newer model plus give me 2 hours to install it. lol. I refused the 2 hours, didn't even take that long to design cut and machine my custom mount!
I also filed 3 reports for stolen traps. One had a picture of the boat that did it.

Yes, there are theiving scumbag bastards in Rupert.

Good Lord NO! Please spend some time figuring out our laws. If you don't know your "Rights" they will soon be taken away from you.

Ken, I have a friend I fish with that will bring a gun case with him on the boat. If you asked him, he would just say bears. If it is legal to have in your truck it is legal to have in your boat. Like a truck, you do need to keep it out of sight.

A Boat is a Truck is a Quad is a Bike.

Storing and transporting are 2 different things.

We use to use a 22cal when fishing for Halibut. Use it to kill them prior to bringing into the boat so they would destroy everything thrashing around.
As we got older and drank more beer we decided guns, beer, halibut and us didnt go along very well.
The truth is the 22 got so rusty one weekend we couldnt use it any more. Yes it was cleaned and oiled. It was a rough weekend.
Biggest thing is do not shoot seals, walrus or other prot3c4ed animals.

Short answer: Of course you can.

We do it all the time.

Did so when guiding (was boarded, they saw it, zero comments).
Do so while commercial trolling (again, same same).
And do so while pleasure fishing for my own.
Even have had them board with a revolver laying on the galley table - slightly raised eyebrow, no comment.

Fill yer boots.
