Sucks but carhopping is probably the easiest crime to commit with little to no consequences if caught... no cops care, at most you're caught stealing a couple bucks in change and maybe some small cheaper items that equate to <$500.
Here in Edmonton, some scumbag(s) used to do it all the time. I used to have a truck with a door handle that had a bad spring mechanism so if you pulled on it, it'd stay extended. I'd always have it pushed in when I parked it. Damn near 1-2x a week it'd be pulled out, indicating someone had given it a yank.

The car "pool" was one scenario I hadn't thought of
