The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
of the big lake they called "Gitche Gumee."
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
when the skies of November turn gloomy.
With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty,
that good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
when the "Gales of November" came early.

The ship was the pride of the American side
coming back from some mill in Wisconsin.
As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most
with a crew and good captain well seasoned,
concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
when they left fully loaded for Cleveland.
And later that night when the ship's bell rang,
could it be the north wind they'd been feelin'?

The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound
and a wave broke over the railing.
And ev'ry man knew, as the captain did too
'twas the witch of November come stealin'.
The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait
when the Gales of November came slashin'.
When afternoon came it was freezin' rain
in the face of a hurricane west wind.

When suppertime came the old cook came on deck

Sayin' "Fellas, it's too rough t'feed ya."
At seven P.M. a main hatchway caved in; he said,

(**2010 lyric change: At 7 p.m., it grew dark, it was then he said,)

"Fellas, it's bin good t'know ya!"
The captain wired in he had water comin' in
and the good ship and crew was in peril.
And later that night when 'is lights went outta sight
came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Does any one know where the love of God goes
when the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
if they'd put fifteen more miles behind 'er.
They might have split up or they might have capsized;
they may have broke deep and took water.
And all that remains is the faces and the names
of the wives and the sons and the daughters.

Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
in the rooms of her ice-water mansion.
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams;
the islands and bays are for sportsmen.
And farther below Lake Ontario
takes in what Lake Erie can send her,
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
with the Gales of November remembered.

In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed,
in the "Maritime Sailors' Cathedral."
The church bell chimed 'til it rang twenty-nine times
for each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
of the big lake they call "Gitche Gumee."
"Superior," they said, "never gives up her dead
when the gales of November come early

A great song by a great entertainer. I used to live at the East end of Gitche Gumee. Its one big lake. From Sault Ste Marie to Thunder Bay it's a 9 hour drive....and the lake is always there beside you. Some of the views rival the mountains.

Gitche Gumee facts
Largest lake in the world (surface area)
length 560 km
width 260 km
depth 1,333 ft
shore length 2,783 km (island shores make up an additional 1,605 km)
surface area 82,000 sq km

My wife an I took a trip to Whitefish point Michigan to the Great lakes ship museum. It was a great trip, from Niagara falls, to the museum. As we were at the museum they announced that if anyone was interested, the Arthur M Anderson was passing by and could be seen from the beach. I stepped In Lake Superior for the first and only time in my life, and watched through my binos as the ship passed. The museum was not big, but it was interesting and still one of the best trips I have ever had. My coffee cup souvenir still sits prominent on my dresser. That was in 1998.
To the Chippewa on down.

I heard he did that song in one take. That's incredible if it's true. That song can choke you up. The legend sung by a legend.

it would probably be almost forgotten except for Gordon Lightfoot and the song, several books as well.

Legend has it that Gordon Lightfoot once paid a visit to the Maritimers Cathedral.

A woman recognized him, approached him and stated, “...IT’S NOT MUSTY!”

That's the guy, Hugh Dillon.

Talked to him several times and he is so humble and appreciative of his fans, and allways puts on an AWESOME show. Especially the last few small venue shows at The Starlight Room. If your at all a rock fan they are a must see band.

Default year of my birth

I certainly do not remember the sinking but it was definitely impressed upon us in Soo schools growing up. Lightfoot's song pulls from me a visceral response. I remember when they found and then pulled the bell from its watery purgatory. It was a pretty big deal!

Having moved here about 15 years ago, the great lakes' enormity and beauty, coupled with with the Canadian shield and its fall colours are something I hope all get to enjoy some day.

Gordon Lightfoot, a fine actor as well as a great song writer entertainer.
If you ever get a chance to see him in a western with Bruce Dern called
"Harry Tracy", you will see he is a very talented man.
