Here, let me break it down for you:

"you people (that don't wear poppies) that come here ( to the GTA ) and love our land of milk and honey" (a reference generally made to areas that are known be be prosperous due to their abundance of opportunity and wealth) and "these guys ( a reference to Veterans ) paid (now pay attention cause this is tricky - he doesn't mean actually pay with money but rather this is symbolism for the huge sacrifice they made, often with their lives, so that others may reap the rewards of a society where free speech is tolerated) for your way of life ( again, a life that allows for freedom of/from speech, expression, unjust persecution, etc) that you came to Canada for" (that you came to Canada for - as opposed to some other 3rd world impoverished dictatorship void of opportunity and the freedoms mentioned here...)

......that truth !

He generalized that "you people" meaning recent immigrants to Canada are unpatriotic, when the majority of them are much more grateful for what Canada has to offer than the local "old stock" that is used to the life in the land of the plenty.

As far as Dons' dismissal is concerned - good riddance to bad rubbish. About time to do away with the xenophobic antics of some doddering sports commentator.

As pointed out earlier, Don stumbled initially when he began making this comment.
Since everyone is eager to read his mind and assume what he meant I'm gonna take another stab at this and say that when he said "You people" he hesitated cause he really wanted to use the new, correct term "peoplekind" but being the polished orator that he is he decided it just didn't sound right and decided to go with the 'ol tried and true "You people" !

He didn't say immigrants, new immigrants, old immigrants, he said "You people … you love our way of life.....". As in people not wearing poppy's, no? You honestly think Don's okay with 50 year old whiteboy not wearing a poppy?

Sounds like your opinion of a generalization may be the lie.

I think Don knew he was on his way out, and decided to go out with a bang. He is in his mid eighties. Brian Burk has been groomed to be his crusty old guy replacement.

He said "You people that come here and love our land of milk and honey". How can you interpret it as anything other than a statement aimed at recent immigrants?
He also referred to urbanized areas of Ontario that have a lot more immigrants living in them than some backwater town with mostly white population.

He referred to people not wearing poppies to support our veterans. Doubt he has any issues with the ones wearing poppies!

Sportsnet fired Don, so I fired them, I cancelled my subscription, and e-mailed them, to tell them why.

He specifically singled out the "you people who come here" in his rant. Anyways, this argument is futile and I have a roast to make.

You people (old stock AOers) should hire Don to represent the publication. Perhaps you can sit around and reminisce about Canada of yesteryear together.

Ironic how you can be racist and ageist while the rest of us are defending our veterans.

It's not just recent immigrants, it's recent immigrants that do not wear a poppy.

I agree with him 100% but I do not think it is a disrespect thing. We don't have time in our school systems to teach proper Canadian history with all the tech stuff that kids have to be up on these days. How could a person 1, 2 or 3 years removed from a foreign land have any idea about the significance of wearing a poppy? Many had no access to proper schools, books or the internet and a great many are busy trying to learn a new language and hopefully a new career. IMO they would wear the poppy if they knew the importance. The Liberal media is too busy chasing stupid tabloid stories and Donald Trump to actually serve the community.

BTW stating small town Canada is backwater compared to the cesspool that is urban Ontario is a joke. Their leader is proven racist and sexist yet they still suck up to him in hope of another hand out.

Well, some of the immigrants are grateful. Some are not. It's about a 50/50 split based on the many that I have had contact with.
I've been told things like "Canada is s***. (Well why are you here then).
"North America was the inventor and cause of slavery throughout history (definitely not true - as anyone can find for themselves).
"Our religion is the only true religion (sorry you are in Canada now where we tolerate all religions - even though western civilization is based on Christian values and not some other system)
I could go on and on for pages.
I wouldn't paint any immigrants lily white. Or any Canadian. But, there has to be a middle ground somewhere.
Not just this nonsense where someone is being victimized because of something someone said that they don't agree with.

If you’re not showing support for our military by wearing a poppy, then maybe you people are terrorists!

Crazy world where a Vet can comment people should support Veterans of this "great" country is BAD, but the head of it all goes Blackface and meh he didn't know it was upsetting, we'll let that slide.

I consider Don Cherry the "Archie Bunker" of HNIC, I watched him, will I miss him not really. Am I sad to see him go, not really Brian Burke will be an excellent replacement.

On the plus side, when Alberta separates, you now have your first Prime Minister , President or whatever you're gonna call him....

I am pretty sure that Don Cherry wouldn't be any more of an embarrassment than our current Prime Minister of Canada.

Gotta admit I agree wholeheartedly with this.
I work in an area of Edmonton that has lot of new immigrants, mostly from North Africa.
We sell 'tech' merchandise...mostly photographic which really appeals to the millennial techy crowd. On the whole I find them much less appreciative of what our veterans have given to this country than the new Canadians that frequent our establishment.

All the veterans I have known would are proud that they protected our freedoms and in this case freedom of speech.

Do not turn this controversy into an attack on the Canadian veterans. I myself have stated that I show respect to veterans/currently serving military personnel as have numerous other first generation immigrants.

This thread is regarding xenophobic views expressed by a hockey commentator, as subtle of an expression as his sublime oratory skills allowed him to make.

His rhetoric does in fact resemble Archie Bunkers' drivel. About time to cast the antiquated clown aside.

Just got back from a Walmart run for tomorrow’s hunting trip. Didn’t see one immigrant wearing a poppy. Soooo shocking. It’s not hard to not trust the loyalties of the current wave of immigrants.
