Default Re-barrel or rebore?

I have a Rem 700 CDL that's a 270 right now. I want to turn it into a 338-06. The rifle itself will be used for a 300 yard max distance shooter with 200 and less being more the normal on any giving day with the style of hunting it would be used for. Muzzle diameter is about .655" minus .338" dived in half leaves about .158" of material all the way around at 24" long. I want to re-use the CDL stock, so if it was to be a new barrel it would be close to a Remington contour. What route would you go, and if it was a rebore, can you guys recommend a gunsmith that will, and doesn't mind doing rebores?

Buy a "take-off barrel" from a Rem 700, have it installed and head spaced for a fraction of the cost of milling a new barrel or having a rebore ,,

Pretty damn hard to find a Remington take off in 338-06

To the op, there should be enough material to rebore but I would recomend a aftermarket barrel. I did a very similar project and went with a benchmark barrel from Gary at bighorn sales. Cost for a new barrel will only be a few hundred more than to rebore and you get a better barrel.

Having done a couple of .338-06 conversions I found the best route is to re-barrel with stainless. The difference in cost between a re-bore and re-barrel is less than $400.00 with the barrel materials and barrel contours built to your specs. There are some great barrels available right here in Alberta with turnaround times usually much less than a re-bore.
At .655 at the muzzle, you have enough diameter to do a nice .338 re-bore. Should you choose this option, Ron Smith (RKS) near Wimbourne, AB does a great job but it may take some time.

Good Choice on the cartridge.

I'm doing this as well. I am having a Ted Gaillard (sp?) SS barrel put on a 700 CDL. I'll start with 180 Acubonds, as well as 200 NAB's, and 210 Np's.

I went with a new barrel from Ron Smith. No complaints. Does very nice work. He also fitted the stock to the new barrel, but I went from 280 to 6mm heavy barrel also.

This is also something I'll eventually be doing. Adding another barrel to my current Savage, factory sporter in either 7mm-08 or .308win...

At $180 US from Numrichs, would it be cheaper buying a barrel this side of the border or getting one shipped here ?

As long as there is enough meat left on the barrel ,I would go for the re bore given the rising cost for new barrels
