Boone and Crocket bison

Well it was an awesome trip, 2300km and 25 hrs driving but well worth it, Co's figure it was about 2600lbs and 14.5 yrs old and should make boone and crocket, Can't wait to gat him officially scored. Man there alot of work 6.5 hrs to get him in the truck. Would do it all over again in a heartbeat. There was 9 others taken on opening day, 1 other from the 4 mine was taken from and the other two were taken the next day about 200yrds from mine. Will post the whole story when i have more time.

Well it all started new years eve we left innisfail at 115 and didn't get to high level till 1245 so we spent new years in the truck driving, but it was worth it. Got up late on the 1st about 8:30 and headed towards rainbow lake, either of us going had never been north of fox creek so it was a new area, then we headed north on the assumption turn, the first road we turned off of we made it about 1/4 mile before spotting some bison, (we hadn't been out 2.5 hrs yet) at first we thought they were cows and a calf because one was noticibly smaller, as we closed the distance greg saw one was a bull then they all were bulls, a group of four of them. So i picked the biggest one and was waiting for a good broadside shot when the Co showed up. He asked if i wanted him backing us up with his shotgun with bean bags just in case, witch was cool. So i got my shot opportunitie and took it as the four of them took off into the bush, we waited about 30 mins and the biologist had showed up in this time and headed into the bush after them. They had only gone about 40 yrds and were all together still. We tried spotting the one i shot but couldn't so we backed out and gave them some more time. after about 45 mins we went back in and still couldn't spot any blood to witch of the four was mine. Just then we heard another truck pulling up so we backed off once again ( which was hard i just wanted to get closer and get it over with) The guys in the truck pulling up had a tag also so they came with us into the bush so they could get there's also, with the 6 of us there now we took are time (20mins) to find the blood on mine, the other hunter ryan had one broadside so on the count of three we shot and they both dropped 25yrds apart. Then it was high fives and picture time. That worked out really good because they were younger (19) and hadn't had to deal with an animal like this before. So they helped us and we helped them, it worked out great as it took 5 of us to role mine over.
We got out the snowmachines and sleds, and proceeded to cut a trail into where they were about 125 yrds into the bush. as we made it to my bison the other two bulls were standing 20yds away looking at us so 5 rounds out of the gun later they took off,( they were shot the next day 200yds away 1 was 9 the other was 11yrs old, and ryans was about 5yrs. mine was 14.)
Now the work started it took us 6.5hrs to get them out. Alot of work but worth evrey bit of it.
Just can't wait to get him scored it'll be my first Boone and Crocket animal..

Any thoughts as to where to get the hide tanned w/hire on???

Halford in Edmonton did a full Moose hide hair-on for me a few years ago. It wasn't cheap by any means but I am happy with it.

Nice animal, congrats. Definitely a unique opportunity for those drawn. I'd have to think 14.5 years is an old bison, pretty cool.

I used a 30-06 180 gr and the co and biologist figured around 2600#'s the butcher nearly S$#T when he seen the size of the ribcage and neck as it was whole. biggest he's delt with.

Excellent looking animal. How did the biologist determine the age of your bull? By the horns, or thru dentition? This is the perfect time of year to hunt them, as the hair on the hides is at its best for tanning, and the bulls have generaly moved off into smaller groups.
That will make for an excellent bbq season at your house !!!
