300RUM vs 308
So I've finally decided upon a rifle (R700P), but im more interested in the 300RUM then a plain jane 308. I've heard its a barrel killer, but it leaves you with more options in the future due to the long action.
How many rounds can you put through a heavy 300 RUM barrel?

I wouldnt worry about burning a barrel out unless you plan on target shooting alot! Like ive had mine for 5 years maybe 80 rounds a year through it snd still lots of life left but if you plan on shooting it lots i would say 1000ish

I could probably do 1000 rounds in a year, I tend to go out a lot with rifles that I like. 40-60 rounds an outing.

That's quite a jump from .308 to taking a pounding with a .300RUM. I'd probably stop at a 300.WM or .300 WSM. What's a RUM going to kill that a WinMag can't?
Mind you, if you aren't going to hunt, nevermind.

I am hunting yote's and paper mainly. This is going to sound utterly stupid, but here it is. All my life I've shot small rounds (6 mill family), and 12g, I've always wanted a 7 mill that had a lot of power behind it. I like 308, and I've definitely shot and enjoyed it before, but I'd like something that still has a lot of power behind it at 1000 yards.

What sort of "power" are you looking for? At extended ranges?
If you are shooting lots (1000 plus rnds a year) the choice of a .308 or a .300rum is very easy...

Being a big guy has nothign to do with the fact that you will shoot the 300 Ultra better tha the 308, I can gaurantee however, that you won't , simply becuse of the amount of recoil generated by it.
The 308 is a much better cartridge for use in an all around rifle , regardless of the distance.

I could be wrong, but isn't the .308 often used as the standard SWAT-type sniper rifle?
That said, if you crave the .300RUM, have at it. We (still) have that freedom.

The average yardage for a police sniper shot is 75 yards or so. I wouldn't want to be a hostage next to a baddy that took a 338 round to the noggin. I imagine parts of his skull would be partially imbedded in the hostage.
Not saying they don't use 338s, would hope they have a smaller option available as well.

The RCMP use a R700P in .308.

Yeah I saw $44 a box! And not many companies produce ammo for it. Looks like i'll be boarding the 308 train.

the 308 is still the standard of the industry.
