Duramax Squeeling Noise - Engine Bay
2009 duramax.
Backyard mechanic here... or in other words, someone who throws parts at things until it's fixed. But this is officially starting to drive me crazy.
Replaced:
- Alternator
- both idler pulleys
- tensioner pulley
- AC compressor
- belt
Still squeeling!
Water pump is gear driven, so don't think it's that.
Fan clutch is my next guess, as I think the sound is coming from the middle of the bay. Don't think it's the power steering pump, as that's mounted on the drivers side of engine and it doesn't sound like that's where it's coming from. But I thought the same thing three times now...
Should have tried a stethoscope to begin with but I'm committed now....
Ideas ???

I had a 350 chev gas motor and I found if I put a jobber fan belt on it then it still squealed. If I bought an expensive belt from the chev dealer it did not squeal. Just something i found with that motor.

Could you take the belt off completely and let it run for a few minutes not moving and check for squeal?

To immediately rule out the belt, is to spray it with silicone spray and if the noise goes away it is the belt. If it doesn't go away, knock the belt off, spin each pulley by hand and listen with a stethoscope on every pulley.

I guess that leaves the power steering pump! Or you have a turbo to engine leak .

You're sure your belt is tensioned properly?

Lmm duramaxs did have water pump/shaft issues.
More of a growl.
Run it without a belt for a couple minutes. If no chirp or squel then it's the belt probably, could be ps pump. Cheap after market belts are known for this.
Worst case if it still squeels start looking at the trans.
Aftermarket turbo by chance?

X2. I’ve had a intercooler pipe rubber connector delaminate and do weird things.

This is a somewhat common dmax squeal.

Does the noise happen only when driving or does it happen while in park.

Both. It's just really noticable when it's parked. Can and road noise drowns it out while driving.
