one of those morning you wish you walked out to the trailer found lots of blood and a finger laying in the snow as the idiot lopped it off attempting to get inside....

Good job sir, and wow, that’s a tank of a burb you pulled out. Awesome.

Those are not the specific regulations pertaining to Cold Lake but regardless, it is indeed closed April 1 to May 14.

the fella that owns fram'n'things has the tubes etc that are made locally here in the cold lake area and since then people have been out on the ice really hitting the eyes/lakers hard with success....I know they work on lakers as we picked up a few to support local business and had success....intel out and about on the lake has the eyes biting good at sunset/sunrise....

What rods do you guys run on your laker setups? My stolen setup was 36" MH Quantum rods, but considering going to a 38-40.

What do you guys run?

I run a 45" MH Haat baitcasting rod and a 40" MH Haat spinning rod. Depends what I'm doing but both are fantastic.

Nice looking rods. Did you find a Canadian dealer or order from the States?

I ordered them state side but a little birdie told me these rods may be available in the Cold Lake area next ice season.

Thanks, was a pretty fun trip overall and the weather was amazing. My son was pretty tickled with that Burbot. We were sure he had a good Laker on with the run it took and it was a bit of a surprise.

I'd really like to try a Haat rod and plan to pick one up. I used one of the Jason Mitchell Macks for a baitcaster this season and it seemed like I lost a lot of fish on it, there isn't a lot of bend to absorb headshakes.

How deep did that burb come from? Do they live down as deep as the lakers do?

well I had a lot of rods over the years I saved as the kids etc had a go at them....last year I sat back and looked at the pile of odds and ends so pieced together 3 home made ones from the pile....keeping them 36'ish or less....from a pro's perspective they are not laker rods, big pike rods but they got good reels on them and run 20lbs braid and they catch from perch to lakers

If I was to purchase dedicated rods again it would be 36"ish or less medium/hard. large eye lets and a good reel too.

I also use my small rods for yak fishing for lakers and eyes as I find them very easy to move around in tight spaces

I have both of these as well and love them when I use the big 1-2oz tubes or for laying a big deadbait on the bottom on the second line. The action on them is probably a medium to medium-fast which great for absorbing the headshakes but they do lack a bit of sensitivity for smaller/lighter presentations. When I downsize to smaller hair jigs, swimbaits or lighter tubes I run the 42" MH Fenwick elite tech. I just like it because it is more sensitive but you still have a long blank that can absorb big head shakes and keep the hooks pinned.

Sorry to hear about your gear getting stolen. Hopefully whoever did it gets what they deserve one day.

That one came from right around 60' and have caught them at over 100' after dark. I'm not sure how deep is to deep and I'm certainly no expert on them on that lake but seem to run in to them more fishing fingers and humps.

Out this morning for one last go at some lakers! First hour was awesome, caught a bunch, lost 2-3 big ones at the hole unfortunately. Fishing died right off after that so we packed up and left! Fish were eating anything laying on the bottom and nothing else really. Ice opened up in a few spots and heaved in others so be careful out there. Heading out for Walleye and Burbs tonight!
