Default new (to me) telephone scam

I received an automated phone call this afternoon from (780)914-9914. A recorded female voice claimed my “IP address has been compromised in several countries. Your IP address will shut down in 12 to 24 hours. Press one now to talk to a technician”. I, of course, hung up. I assume it is a scam but I had not heard of it before and thought I would make others aware.

The newest scam I've been getting is an email saying I've been left a voicemail and a link to open up to listen. Today, i'd been left a message by Federal Judges. Yep. Delete.

I did some reading on it, and this is what they are doing:

Last Friday one of my good friends fell victim to one like this, well his wife did.

She got the call while he was at work. She grabbed his laptop and the "tech" walked her through the steps needed for him to access the computer.

My friend was at work when his wife called and told him about the "problem" she had "fixed".

He logged into his online bank and all of his accounts were sitting at ZERO.
Somehow they got into his online banking and transferred ALL of his money to an unknown account.

I can imagine how that conversation went when he got home...

I've had three calls in the last week from someone noting I'm going to go to jail, I believe they noted they were an officer with the Canada Revenue Agency! They must be super cool because their outgoing call display shows up with no hypens in their phone number.

They have been calling me for the last year. I have a warrant out for my arrest unless I pay them money right away.

They told me I owed $4237.29.
I asked if they accepted bad cheques.
They hung up.

Just tell them you don't have a computer. They hang up abruptly.

These ones are so obnoxious and they won't quit that I'm surprised no one has filed a complaint with the Federal Transport Commission.

Are these landline scams ?
If a scammer had to pay a penny for a call, this crap would likely stop.
Landlines are on their way out, many people I know no longer have one.
Then again, I’m sure there are cell scams too.

Wife got a text message saying that Revenue Canada deposited money to her account. Please follow the link provided to confirm the details.

I've had quite a few of these, i like the word "compromised", i get almost the same call regarding a lien notice on my property that most be removed immediately or you will loose your house.
How legit can theses guys be, they phone once a week, but tell you you've got 24 hours to respond. Tools.

I've heard of a few that fell for the revenue Canada you owe money scam.
the one lady i knew actually had not paid her tax debt, and she fell for it.
That's what the scammers gamble on, someone who hasn't filed or paid what they owe.

Had quite a few myself. I ask them if they can hear me because I can barely hear them. If they say yes I ask if the are sure they can hear me (they usually say I've turned my volume up or similar). I then go get my Fox 40 referee's whistle.....Calls seem to be ceasing

I look forward to calls from my buddy Rajesh in India. We always have excellent conversation about our mothers and our pets. Always ends in fits of laughter.

What I find laughable is the ones with really thick heavy accents you can barley understand and they tell you their name is Tim or Mike or John......

I have a hard time believing this. Mostly because canadian banks dont make it easy to transfer funds between their own banks let alone one in another country. E transfers used to be a scammers go to option but there are lots of safe guards in place now.

Many banks also require special access codes that are different from your login/passwords to do certain transactions.

TD was one bank that allowed you to do large transfers but only between td customers. This would greatly reduce ones risk to a scammer.

I had someone call me last night wanting to do a survey of opinions of local radio stations. As soon as I asked why, they hung up. Weird........

Don’t know what to tell you. I’ve known this guy for over a decade and he has no reason to lie to me. I was just telling the story how it was told to me.

Just received a robo call from Revenue Canada Ottawa 613-519-2079 asking me to call back some other number. Googled the 613-519-2079 number and it has been reported as a scam. Number now blocked on my iPhone.

If you are suspicious of any phone number......google it

Nope. He has borrowed money from me in the past but never had to make up a story for it. He was also on the phone with the bank a few times while I was there.

Worst part if it happened that way is they wont get their money back. If a bank figures out you gave someome access youll be the one responsible.

Those warrants must expire pretty quick because they have threatened me every year since my 18th birthday. I wonder if that warrant is still out for me because I refused to pay the fine for " all the child porn on my hard drive" I wonder if the revenue agents are all on the free holidays they won on Westjet and are still too busy to come arrest me.
