I have a five gallon bucket of bacon grease if anyone in the Edmonton/Sherwood Park area wants to trade for beavers?
Nice work man! Good idea to get it in early while it’s east to skid! And it breaks up that cabin fever

Thanks! Went back out this week and cleared a bunch of lanes, put out the cams, and got the tree stands up as well, and almost completed the 'bear wall'. Just have to finish the wall this weekend and it'll be ready for bait!

When does everyone typically start getting bears on their baits?

Will bears be out earlier then usual with this warmer weather? Or do they usually come out at the same time every year?

This warm weather might bring early greenery and gets the bears in the open more for sure.
The rule of thumb though is most guys will see baits picking up hard around first week of May. There will be guys that score decent bears in April, but that is the major exception of the rule. My favourite time to spot and stalk is right around may long. The best/most abundant food is in the wide open as the bush hasn’t had a chance to “green up” yet.

Regardless it’s fun to break cabin fever and feed the odd straggling bear in mid April. You’ll end up feeding more squirrels and ravens than anything else though. I found by “prime time”, if I started too early in the year I was bait depleted and burnt out from the process. It’s a lot of work.

Have fun!

Back in the day, I used old bread from Mcgavins, truck load cost me 20 bucks, hauled it in, then made cool aid, to put on it, cool aid smells great to bears, shot a lot of bears when I was younger

Well I got barrels set up in a location to try out baiting bears for the first time. Location has a slough near by, mixed mature timber, natural feeding areas close, and the wind should be in my favor most days

Got everything set out! Barrels are full. One is pastries with fryer grease, the roller barrel is popcorn with strawberry syrup and tang. I've poured grease in front of the barrel. The beaver is hanging across the red ratchet strap; I drilled some holes in the bottom of the bucket so it would seep out. I went around with a spray bottle and sprayed strawberry syrup on all the trees around the bait and nearby ridges. I sprayed some syrup on the bottom of my sled on the way in and out as well.

I know its early but I enjoy the process and like to get out.

I'll update next week. Let's see who gets the first photos of the year! Good luck to everyone baiting and thanks to those giving advice/tips, especially wildwoods (Ty)!

Better to drill holes a couple inches down from the top. This way it won’t dry out. Will instead ferment and stay juicy and will constantly run out of top holes and last all season.

That makes a lot of sense. I have another beaver I'll do it with that one. Thanks for the tip!

Yep no doubt. For me it's not about just shooting a bear, I've done that before. I enjoy the process of baiting and collecting photos and seeing lots of bears. Allows me to be more selective as well.

Dang, some of those barrels have holes big enough for me to get inside the thing!

I had a barrel, with a 3/4" hole at the top. one hole. Filled the whole barrel with dog food, popcorn, syrup and SECRET INGREDIENT liquid smoke as a scent trail (put it about 7' high along the trees on a cutline for 300m). Rolled the barrel around to disperse bait within it.

Shot my bear 7 days later, go and open up the barrel. Almost nothing left. A whole barrel, full, and they managed to pull out everything through a 3/4" hole.

I ended up putting my trail cam on the bait after and found 7 different bears were hitting the bait.

So please! You don't need a 2'x2' hole in a barrel to attract bears... Take a page from your wife or girlfriend and play hard to get!!!

Anyone have a handle on oats new at Albert? Or even dog food? I'm looking for something to add to my second barrel. It'll be mixed with used grease mixed with gold rush.

Where are you getting gold rush from? Looks interesting.

Peavey Mart sells both oats and large bags of dog food.
