I've had most of the ones above, really like the .17 hornet and .17 fireball,
If had to be limited to one varmint cartridge, my choice would be the 20 Vartarg, flat,fast, and resanable cheap to run, 18 gr powder, 32-35 gr bullet normally,
Depends a bit on what varmints you are after,
.222 or .223 if you don't reload,
I've got a 6x45 and 6x47 Remington, these are 6mm, biased on .223 and.222 mag case, a very versatile little cartridge, along with the 6PPC, varmints to smallerdeer, with appropriate bullets.

One comment, I will make with the smaller capacity varmint cartridges, ie .17 hornet, fireball biased cartridges, is you can spot your shots(hits),
Sight picture can be lost even with a .223 espically if rifle is light.

Prophet River has Howa 1500 rifles in 222 in stock, just bought a new one myself last week, great shooting rifle for $729
