Nothing on mine yet. Last year it was April 25th for my first bear on cam but, had some pictures of Martin and 1 cougar before that. Snow is a couple weeks ahead of time so I’m hoping in the next 10 days. Can’t wait!

Was on the Hard Luck trail the other day gathering stuff. Saw two separate sets of tracks. They are waking up.

Heading up to Valleyview area tomorrow for the weekend.
Got breads, pasteries, dry dog food, oats/molasses and some frozen ground beef that needs disposing.

Hoping for some hits within a week.

I was out today, thinking it's gonna be a little while yet. Rain and snow forecast for Sunday here.

Just give it 2 weeks.
Good ones usually wake up May 5 or so on.

The fence is designed to ensure the position of the bear while it is feeding. They also provide a backstop and method of judging size.

As far as the good ones not waking up till May 5th, sorry but that is not correct. The large boars you are looking for tend to be the earliest out of the dens, but it also very much depends on snow cover, and temperature at the den site.

The fence helps keep the bears in a position in front of the shooter, if they want to hit the baits they have to come around in front. It’s a great way to make sure you are shooting a target bear. In areas left open the bear can approach behind the barrels and not offer a shot opportunity or an opportunity to decide if it is a target bear.

(Dean and I posted same time )

I have had BIG bears be the first ones into the bait, and also the last.
I would say more often than not though it's the young single bears that make poor dens coming in first, the sows with older cubs coming in second, then the sows with footballs, and the big guys last.
They might be awake earlier, but in my experience they aren't moving around much until the rut starts and the grass is green.
My 2 cents.

I built the fence so the bears would have to come out front and if they're in the barrel they will offer me a broadside shot. I also painted the one log black at six feet from the barrel so I know approx how big the bear is.

I sat on the stand last night. Watched a sow and 3 cubs eat for over 30 mins before they moved on. Pretty cool watching them up close and see there mannerisms live. I always love that part, it really gets the blood going.

In the very northern part of Minnesota here bears pop out now and again all winter long. As for spring awakening in 40 some years of record keeping at my bear camp here the 2 year olds are most often the first up and about.
A buddy of mine found a very large bear denned smack in the middle of a farm field a couple years ago. That bear was up and out often thru winter and in the spring was off and gone early. Maybe water in the den, who knows, they are bears. No hard rules in a bears world.

Bait was set up E of Valleyview on Apr 17, so 15 days now and no hits, hmm.
One cam on a trail only 3-400 yds away had a nice choc, can’t figure out how he missed the bait.

Any day now...
