Default 514 Cow Elk

Going to go ahead and expose the fact that I am a dumby. I went ahead and jumped on a undersubscribed cow elk tag in 514 not realizing at that moment that I eliminated my general tag. Oh well I can live with that. Also not knowing a damb thing about the area other then what I hunter shows me. I have access to the wolf lake grazing area. Just wondering if anybody knows the area and if I should concentrate on the grazing lease more or the oilfield access in the area. I have until December 20 not planning to go out there until the first week of December. Any tips much appreaciated.

Not looking for a gimmee here, and I will be getting out there and putting “miles on my boots” so please spare those comments

You would be wasting your time looking for elk in that area. I've hunted wolf lake and surrounding area for past 7 years. No elk there.

She is out of St Paul.

Good luck and if you do connect buy a lottery ticket that same day.
Better odds of dropping a caribou, and elk would be slightly better odds than mountain goat in that WMU.

On a positive note at least it’s an under subscribed tag
I wouldn’t lose any sleep not getting an elk since there probably isn’t any in that wmu

Lesson learned I guess. Will still try and salvage a hunt out of it regardless.

If that hunt falls in November too I'd be going then so at least you have a chance at a WT during the rut, some gooders in that zone....

-The Biologist is out of Bonnyville office, Her name is Barb Maile.
-Though I have not seen any Elk in the grazing reserve, I have seen them in WMU 514. Look on East side.
-You will need to put on some miles to find any Elk though, I am still unsure why they opened this zone. It is like they don't want any Elk in the zone.
-Your odds of connecting on a whitetail are very good, but that zone is swarming with road and quad hunters from Sept.1 until Nov.30.

Although 514 is a sizable WMU, I've been in that area for over 40 years and have hunted it every now and then from one end to the other. Lots of bear, whitetail, wolf, the odd moose, a few rare mulies, and 2 caribou (that were quite a surprise to see) in all the years and journeys I've made up there. Elk however will be a tough one.

Agree with the other fellow its hunted quite hard right from September. Just please be cautious if hunting in 514, as there is a ton of industry, recreational, residence throughout that area. Be safe out there.

Well curly bill, there are 5 tags for undersubscribed cow elk in 514 this year.... although I hunt WT in that area and never saw any sign of elk, did you see anything last year?

If you get an elk there you will be about on the same page as the indian fellow that shot the albertan muskox.

Probably the same odds seeing a musk ox as you would seeing an elk
