Default Light for caliber bullets for 375H&H

Anyone with first hand experience? Looking at the Hornady Outfitter loaded with the 250 gr CX and GMX bullets;and the Nosler Trophy Grade loaded with the 260 gr Partition bullets.

Not a lot heavier but I’ve shot bison with a federal loaded 375 w/300gr partitions. Have no doubt a 260 Would have given me the same results provided I do my part!!

You might want to study a ballistic chart before you drop down to a lighter bullet weight. None are great past 300 yards but the Sierra 300 gr. SP is still the best balletically and terminal power wise, besides recoil is about the same for both bullet weights. JMO

What are you hunting?
Prophet river has the outfitter cx in stock
They will be a deep penetrating bullet
These are pretty new so I don’t think too many people have any on game terminal performance reviews yet. I think they would work pretty good for any large game. A 375 h&h isn’t a long range boomer. But I think whatever you hit with one of these missiles will feel it. I used the ttsx out of my 378 wby for a zama bison and it was a pass through. I imagine you will get the same results

I’ve shot a couple 260 partitions into moose. One pass through And one slipped its front core and stopped under the off side hide. Shot one with the 250 gmx, recovered under off side hide text book mushroomed. I was surprised a size medium bull stopped the gmx. Moderate range shots with a 375 weatherby.

I will be hunting antlered elk in east central AB so likely maximum range will be 300 yards. I will also likely hunt black bear in NW AB and maximum range likely will be 300 yards as well. I need to do some more research on ballistic charts but looks like drop at 300 yards will be -8.8" and -25" at 400 yards if sighted in at 100 yards.

I usually shoot ammunition loaded with 270gr and 300 gr "premium bullets" but due to limited supplies at retailers might have to try something different.

I switched to the 270 Grain Barnes. it has a .325 B.C., in the 375 Ruger and the H&H. I can easily get it to 2700 fps. 2.8" high at 100 gives me a 225 yard zero, -7 at 300 and -24 at 400 and it is still doing 1785 fps with 1900 Foot pounds of energy. There is no reason this combination won't work to at least 600 yards, as long as you know your drops out to that range. Assuming the 270 Partition has a similar B.C. it should be very close to these numbers. (I think the ballistic chart numbers you quoted are out by a bit. May want to double check them.)

Dean2, thanks for your input. The ballistics I quoted are for the Hornady Outfitter 250gr CX factory ammunition. Slight misquote on my part, 100 yard trajectory should be 2.1 high not sighted in at 100 yard zero.

Scrolling up and down and side to side on a
smart phone is sometimes a challenge for a old timer.

375HH.pdf Barnes Load Data for the H&H in case you are interested.

Hornady shows the 250 grain CX with a B.C. of .403 and a velocity of 2700 fps so should be very close trajectory to the 270 TSX Barnes. (They also make the 270 grain LRX with a 449 B.C. so would be a better choice in the Barnes line than the TSX if you were shooting over 300 yards regularly) The Hornady Ballistic Calculator shows 2.8" high for a 225 yard zero, and the 300 and 400 yard drops are very close, so no idea how the bullet behaves on game but should be a good choice and Hornady generally makes great game bullets. I still shoot a lot of their bullets. My preference is if I can shoot a heavier bullet at the same speed I prefer the heavier option, but if you don't hand load that may not be an option you can choose.

Thanks again Dean. Yes I reload but the issue is that I do not currently have .375 diameter bullets in my stock. Have been searching online and phoning around for Nosler 270gr Partitions with no success. I thought I sourced some Swift A-Frame 270 gr a few days ago and got a order confirmation email but shortly after received a phone call stating they could not find the 1 box of bullets that they had online so back to searching again. I will likely order some Hornady Outfitter 260gr CX from PR later today. I previously bought 2 boxes of Nosler Trophy Grade with the 260 grain Partition bullets so I hope both the Hornady ammo and Nosler ammo works for me. I have two rifles chambered for 375H&H so likely ammo will work in one or both rifles. Fingers crossed.

If I'm not mistaken, last time I was at Barton's they had a decent stock of .375 bullets. I can have a look for you tomorrow and report back if you'd like? I'd have no problem picking some up and putting them in the mail for you if they have something you like.

I will be happy to check. If they do have some, I will snap some pics so you can see what they have and the price. Will let you know tomorrow.

Just got confirmation from Twisted Canuck that he was able to buy for me 4 boxes of Barnes 270gr LRX from Barton's. Should be mailed from Twisted Canuck to me today.

I also checked Nechako Outdoors, some decent quantities in stock. Added a different item to my shopping cart, more $ spent lol.

So thank you very much Twisted Canuck, Dean2 and marky mark for your assistance. Greatly appreciated.

My thoughts, I would never sight my hunting rifle dead on at 100yds. Go 2-3” high at 100yds. The target you’re aiming at is large. Why hamper yourself with having to hold high at 2-300yds when you could just be aiming middle of vitals and shooting to kill.

Agreed.
The bullets I have coming are Barnes 270gr LRX.
I will do some research on a ballistic calculator to determine the point blank range when I have time. Will likely be around 225 yards I think.

Was just in p and d. They have a good variety of loaded 375 h and h as well as Barnes and Hornady 375 projectiles in various weights.

Ant left looking for a 7 rem mag, they have a rem old in great shape with a Leupold scope for 900 bucks.

It’s a terrible idea to not know what your zero is
2-3” high and just guessing will give you inaccurate results
If it was 1995 and laser range finders and ballistic calculators weren’t invented. Sure zero 2-3” high and just send it and hope you hit something
If you want consistent accuracy, you need to have a established zero at a known distance

Word replace on my phone is a major pain in the Butt.

Last sentence should have said; Anyone looking for a 7 Rem Mag in Left Hand, P&D has a used one in great shape. It is a Rem 700 BLD, skip line checkering era, so after regular cut checkering and before pressed so mid 90s era, with a Leupold Scope for $900.

I didn’t say you shouldn’t know what your zero is. I just said I think a 100yd zero is a waste of time, IMO. My hunting rifles get set 2-3” high at 100yds, I know the velocity and bullet BC. I use a ballistic calculator to know my zero range, verify that by shooting, and a piece of masking tape with that rifle and load’s data written on it get stuck on the side of my stock so I can quickly see. I do use a range finder. But after quickly ranging it with the way I have my zero set, I can easily decide if I need to adjust for drop or just shoot to kill.

So how do you know your zero? By using a ballistic calculator?
My favourite hunting stories always start by somebody saying, I shot this deer, it was 800 yards away, I held it 6 feet above his back and I dropped him. Lol
