West jet money grab?
So if you and your wife decided to go to Mexico for Holliday and one dies before you go on the trip,so the survivor goes alone just because the money will be lost if not.The survivor wants to try getting a refund for their spouse and tries a few weeks later ,but is told that he or she had to ask for this refund on the return trip, any time later and you miss your chance to get the refund. Does this seem fair?

Check credit card. Many cards have trip cancelation insurance. Some sites may have it too.
Typically to file a claim you need to have applied by a certain date. Complaining may get an extension.
Transferring to another may of been an option. Sometimes for a $100 you can convert the tickets to a credit.

If I understand the chain of events you described....(Flight for two booked / one dies prior to the flight to the destination / partner does not advise WJ but goes on the flight / returns on the home bound flight without advising WJ / then decides to try for a refund a few weeks later ....yes, it seems fair. Bottom line, is that if the seat could have been sold to someone else, WJ is out revenue if they refund.

Cancellation insurance would have paid for both people in this situation. Either way, Westjet or the insurance company should have been contacted before the flight date.

Yes... Unfortunately. An attempt should've been made during the initial check-in.
Sorry to hear of your loss, if this has actually happened to you.

West jet money grab
Thank you for your replies. Depending though on how long before the death of the other partner ,which in this case was about 2 weeks before, definitely not designed for people who grieve in my opinion.

So sorry for your friend.
I think he has way more important things to consider and worry about. Though perhaps all this is a great distraction. If it gives him some relief by confronting this issue, I say go for it. Perhaps some counselling will help.

I don't get it. Trip cancellation insurance is always available, even if your credit card does not have it. We all often gamble that we will not need it, and do not sign up, and once in a while, it bites. Why pull out the fairness" card when the decision had been made to gamble. It is exactly the same thing with people who travel out of province, without travel medical insurance, and then are "surprised" that only medical expenses incurred in province are paid by provincial medical coverage. Feel free to gamble (I have), but do not pull out the "fairness" card. That is beneath you.

Always protect yourself, cancellation insurance, you just never know if you will need it, no excuses, airlines are a business to get the seats full, you are a number in a seat.
