I actually went out yesterday to one of my "Honey Holes" for grouse! I had three on the go, but only managed to secure one. .22 Mag did the job just fine! It was beautiful out. Seen lots of rabbit tracks, but no luck...

Actually going to fry him up tonight for dinner.

I agree just getting out is fun. We have been keeping our eyes out for grouse and pheasant while coyote hunting. Or is that the other way round?

it's been a great year for grousse, they seem to be much bigger for some reason. I like to go for a walk with the old 410, but only a few weeks left

Why cut the limit in half and then extend the season to the middle of winter?

I've noticed that they're not in my usual honey holes. Do they change habitat during winter, or what?

^^^I'm not sure. Walking a old oil road late October this year I passed by over 15 grouse (hunting elk & deer) and the same road, same time of day, late December.....nothing. I found them by the roads at first light this December.

I was out last week. The dog flushed a few... seemed to like the areas under the evergreens where the ground was bare or close to it.

Tons of rabbit tracks, but didn't see any rabbits. Still some red squirrels out... thought they'd be hibernating by now.

I forgot about this and went to collect some firewood on crown land. What would you know, drove by 3 of them 1ft of the bush road. The moment I saw them I remembered!

I could be wrong, but I didn't think squirrels hibernated. I know I've shot them all winter long in the past. I suppose they might "hibernate" for a week or so during severe cold weather.

i think you may be correct. Although a number of rodent species hibernate, including the Richardson's ground squirrels, red squirrels might not... never thought about it before.

Heading out tomorrow morning to start my 2016 with a bang. Hopefully bag a bird or two. I'll post up some pics if I get some.

Unfortunately I only saw one grouse, got a shot off through some branches. Looked as though I had it down, by the way it was flapping around after the shot. When I started to walk towards it though, it flew away, about 10 feet . Then as I walked closer, it took off again about 40 yards away. No idea where it went after that! Never did find it.

I was pretty upset, I should have double tapped it, while it was flapping around! Might have had a different outcome! Oh well, there's always the fall season. Had a great day, despite the lost animal. Weather was amazing!!

Waterninja is right - red squirrels don't hibernate. They are a little less active when it's really cold, sometimes they spend time below the surface in their middens. It's warmer down there and they can eat the seeds from the cones they stored in the fall.

Only got a "few". Is the limit six? How many do you need?

I'd say that's up to him. What concern is it to you?

I see 5 ruffies and one spruce. Read the regs. I have 4 kids and a wife so if the limits 5 then I will fill 5 if I can. One should not question someone's ethics if they can't take the time to read the regs. Happy new year now to go grouse hunting.

Been out a couple times around Rocky.
1st day (Dec 21st-ish) we saw 8-10, ended up with 2.
2nd day (Dec 28th-ish) only saw 2, and ended up with 1. A little bit of weather was moving in or just passing is my best guess, had them holding tight.

Always great to get out and trek around regardless. Probably wont get out again with school firing back up. Plus, got to start saving those gas dollars for next fall.

I consider 6 birds an excellent day. I read the regulations last fall and thought the daily limit was 5 not 6. What's your interpretation? It is a very nice photo.

From last month. Taken with my 20 ga, #7.5 Federal Heavy game loads.

Always loved hunting grouse.

You also assumed he was hunting alone.

Simple rule of thumb around here when it comes to other's field photos. Keep it positive, or keep it to yourself. A blatant case of poaching may be the exception to this rule.
