Thumbs up Outdoor Rinks: Post 'Em Up!

Let's share photos and ideas on rink building, maintenance, and of course all the fun times that go with it. I just poured mine yesterday. We have laid a silage tarp down at 60x100. We hauled 37,000 litres yesterday and will add 20,000 more today to build it up. This is our first ever rink and we have some good ideas for a side x side "Homeboni".

Our backstops are 8' high. We purchased the lighting on Amazon: x3 at 200W and x2 at 100 watts, all on homemade wooden. Those stands come handy for late summer badminton when the sun goes down too. They are at 10-12' in the air so you aren't blinded when playing with head up.

We are stoked to get playing! Post your rink building and ideas everyone!

Stipulation: the current virus is outlawed from this thread. Go somewhere else is you want to bring it up!

Fantastic!! Wish I had the yard for it. Community league has not done the rinks the last few years, but thankfully a few volunteers came forward and are doing it this year! 2 blocks away so that will work for us.

Great job!!

I bought this one a few years ago with the idea of putting it up for the grandkids but after some thought I realized in southern alberta it would turn into a kite when the first 100km plus wind hit..
PS.. it is for sale for $1,000 if anyone wants it. It 55’x85’..

Jim..

Kids have been skating on ours for about a week now. 48x24 with 4 ft boards and 4 feet of chicken wire all around. I’d sure like the daytime highs to get into the negatives. Midnight floods are getting tiring

Great thread idea. Nice rink wildwoods

We just scrape and flood the lake but the kids are on it all winter. Hundreds of hours. We lose about 60 pucks over the winter but the kids dive down and find them all in the spring With minor hockey shut down again we will be seeing a lot of time on the lake this winter starting this weekend.

Got a 6 kW light tower this summer which will be nice for the rink.
It light up the world. We used it for a couple of (small....) parties this summer.

Great job, nothing like skating/playing on a lake. There's just better about it!!

I agree on the minor hockey, its not looking great to start back up so im expecting the kids to be busy out there this winter

Love seeing the fish swimming under the ice.

When I was a teenage one night I launched my sled through the air when I hit the windrow of an ice rink (built in the middle of a lake). My packed trail separated from the guys I was following so I turned into the fresh snow and pinned it to catch up. As an idiot I over drove my headlights hit some brush turned to look back to see what it was (sticks put in place to warn of the rink) and then I hit the wall.

Remember many , many years ago when Pigeon Lake froze over 2-3 ft of clear hard smooth ice with next to no snow . What a blast , you could shoot a puck so hard that it would almost disappear from sight . Fun times .

Just before Christmas 2016 Wab was like that for a while. We skated to Seba Beach and let the wind blow us back a bunch of times LOL. It's really cool to skate on the ice and be able to see the bottom of the lake!

Great rinks guys!
We put a rink in last year with no backstop; we were picking pucks out of the Bush for months! Upgraded this year with 4' boards and wire fencing up to 8' at one end, and 2' boards the rest of the way around. It's only 24'x38' but it's enough for my boy to make me look old and slow!

Awesome addition to your acreage. Bet the kids are loving it. Now you have no excuse for your weak slapshot, what with all that ice to practice on.

The slap shot is fine, it’s all the other aspects of the game

We got the surface flooded a few times and the lights fired up this weekend.
The boy and his friends skated for about 5 hours.
Should see lots of action this winter.

I sure hope it doesn't get as warm as they say it is going to!

Well the warm weather killed momentum. We’ve hauled water till we were blue in the face but she’s coming along. Tonight was an excellent night for flooding. I dare say tomorrow am the kids will finally wake up to a fully functioning rink!

Looking really good wildwoods.

On the lake I am actually starting off way worse than the first time. The lake froze pretty good this year but it is not looking good now. It is quite a bit easier to drill a hole and pump it than it is to haul it in tho so nice work on your rink. For us hopefully a flood tonight and early tomorrow AM will get it skateable again.

Have a good weekend on your rink!

I don't get to much sun so mine held up ok. Lots of late night floods but it held up. I've had it in for 26 days now and there has only been 3 days I kept the kids off of it completely. A few days where the sun had to go down before they could skate as well

Ya my water truck guy has a pond he floods like yours. That’s awesome. How do you contain the water on the edges? Just surface flood in thin layers? Your rink looks great!

Nothing fancy for us. I just use a 2" gas pump and pour it on. First few times quite a bit runs off but a lip does get built up where the snow bank is and there is some containment eventually. It's tough to get good ice quality but it's OK

Default Full of the back yard!

We don't have much room but it works out not to bad. Have since added some bird netting to help keep pucks (orange plastic ones) from all of the neighbors yards.
