Default Red Deer river

Just moved to Red Deer and am wondering how the river fishes in town? What are guys catching and what’s the preferred gear and method?

There are several holes near the Three mile bend area, that are heavily fished, yet will yield a fish or two. Hardest part is getting away from people. Another area down by Riverbend golf course, and also one near the bend by Heritage ranch. Rivers down a bit so it will be easier walking to get to them. Good luck

The RDR is a great fly rod or ultra-light river. There are certainly some big pike, but the most common quarry are either goldeye or walleye. i personally prefer goldeye---more exciting to catch. As you go upstream of Red Deer, there is a possibility of hooking into some of the prettiest brown trout in the province.

The goldeye are pretty much everywhere, so it is not a problem finding a quiet spot. I have been fishing the RDR for about 40 years. I would be interested to hear how others gear up.

i caught a delicious brown trout last summer much further upstream just outside Sundre, from the shore just a very basic set up. i imagine the bigger stuff would be a little further down stream where the river widens and deepens (closer to red deer) but you definitely have a gem in your own backyard there.
