Farmers Markets
Anyone have good reviews on farmers markets that are an hour or so outside of Edmonton?

I often wonder...actually I never wonder because I know the score with many of them. Ever wonder why you can look behind the stalls and see the same produce boxes that you can see behind stores or restaurants?

Chef, because people grab those boxes from behind restaurants to transport their product as they are ideally suited for that use?

Which direction, and what are you looking for? There is one here every week in the mall. Maybe 50 vendors. A lot is kind of rubbish, but some good finds as well.

There is a large population of hutterites and mennonites out this way, often selling their meat and vegetables. Can't guarantee anything, but there are usually a few. Might be worth a trip.

Maybe but I doubt it. When it’s a cauliflower box and they’re selling cauliflower it seems a bit suspicious.

Hucksters Market
Don't think a true farmers market exists anymore. St. Alberta has a market. 104 St market in Edmonton.

I had a “chat” with one of the vendors “farmers” a few years back... if he was a farmer than I’m a cosmonaut. Majority of these “ farmers” were buying the produce from the Sunfresh farms here in Edmonton, just like Safeway and Superstore... same boxes, same produce, double the prices.
Nothing like I have seen in Europe where the farmers market is actually for farmers. You should compare their hands side by side, lol! The guys here almost have a manicure!
When you are entering markets in Europe- you know that, you can actually SMELL it!

I know the local "ites" are pretty legit.... they sell chickens, eggs, vegetables, sometimes sausage. I work with a few, and they live on the colonies farming and growing and creating these products. They will make deals with coworkers and bring in things to work on almost a daily basis as well, and sell

We try to hit up the Sherwood Park Farmer's Market when we can. It's Wednesdays between 4-8pm.

There’s one in Morinville that the Morinville Hutterites and others sell at. I think that it’s every Friday but you can confirm with google.

The Callingwood farmers market in Edmonton is pretty good. Some farm raised meats. Mostly local greenhouse produce. Lots of homemade ethnic/cultural foods. Jamaican, Ukrainian, Italian, and German off the top of my head. Usually a fish monger there too, but I'm just not too sure how legit it is.
Regardless, I think its a pretty good market. Get there early or Baba will be out of cabbage rolls and perogies. The old Italian grandma's Canneloni's are pretty awesome too.

Alberta Beach on Sunday
Stony Plain is good.
Spruce groves looks okay but seems to be weird hours.
The Morinville one is not bad, colony is set up there and if Amanda is selling pastry, it is the best you’ve ever eaten I swear.
St Alberts sucks!!!
And the vendors aren’t allowed to carry any PORK products so you won’t find me there.

The Sherwood Park one held in the Home Depot Parking lot is crap. Lots of hand made but wildly expensive crafts if your looking to furnish your grandmothers home. I havent been to the one at the green house so I cant comment on quality but it looks much bigger from what I have seen.
The one just off Whyte Ave. is pretty good but I think they may be closed for reno's?
I drive by the Deville Farmers Market quite often but never manage to stop and take a look. If seems fairly busy - Tuesdays 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm @ the North Cooking Lake Community Hall

Living a couple hundred miles from big centers like E @ C sure helps. All are small markets are great with fresh baking and veggies in season. I stop for snacks at many and always manage to walk by the "ites" as I want good stuff.
