Default Earth quake at Alberta beach and sounds on the ice

Not sure if the two are related but I'm around Bonnyville sand I've never heard the ice so talkative as it was yesterday. Had a crack open between my feet and my buddy had one shoot past him. Crazy stuff.

Anyone else notice this yesterday.

I would think it is the huge change in temperature. Just think how cold it was and how warm it is now. Ice is going to expand and crack a lot. That with no snow cover means we will continue to see and hear evidence of ice changing. I guess the Southerns should weigh in and see if they hear / see this more regularly down south?

As for the earthquake...possible too. We live 5 kms away from Devon and our well hole to the pipes which is a 3 foot diameter culvert collapsed...or really more looks like the earth came up from underneath to me. That and we have one crack in the yard that is an inch wide now. The cracks extent from one side of the farm to another side too. Could be frost...but looks pretty much exactly what they were showing on global. That and well collapsing which has been there for 15 years seems like too much evidence to blame on frost. Does anyone know who you would contact to find see if the could investigate to see if there was any higher level of seismic activity in our area?

Ice at Slave yesterday was the loudest I've heard in a while. We had one crack-boom so loud it set off the jaw jacker! That one sounded like it piled a bunch of ice up in a heave at a distance as well.

According to global news, it was a minor quake. Some one post the water clarity when you go there this next few days. I would be very hesitant to drive on that ice for week or more now.

This link might show it.

Technically isn't this a frost quake, not an earthquake?

Could be. We've been through many frosts before...as in 5th generation land owners. This is the first that we have seen something like this. I'll contact the AGS and see what they say.

The temp change was my first thought as well when I was on the ice but I have never in my life heard the ice pop and crack and make weird bubbling sounds like it did yesterday so when I saw that news story this morning I thought maybe they were connected. Either way it was bizarre. Headed back out today so well see what it's like.

Looks like a geologist is coming out tomorrow to examine the cracks. So far he is thinking ice quakes but really wants to have a look.

He will also have to take into account the well hole that magically filled up with dirt - about 8 feet deep. To me it looks like it filled from the bottom up. That well hole was done about 4 years ago and was surrounded by 5-10 feet of sand every direction - 3 foot culvert in the middle. So the fact that loose dirt has filled it is why I'm saying bottom up.

Was out at South Buck on Monday, was the loudest noise I have ever heard from the ice. Close to 18" thick and still made you wonder if it was safe or not. -29 when we got our there in the morning, close to -8 in the afternoon, that's a ton of temperature change and was what we believed was causing all the noise and movement. Had no idea about quakes of any sort.

We were at Gull yesterday.

I have fished hard water for many years, under all temperature extremes. Yesterday was the first time I heard the ice making that much noise. I mean the noise was not letting up... all day long. Some sounded like typical thermal cracking... just like thunder but most of the time it sounded like something different. Weird for sure.

-30 to -10 creates around a 0.2% expansion in ice. Start talking lakes like St. Anne etc that are ~ 6 km across and you are talking a lot of ice movement. Add in how it went from extremely warm to extremely cold to extremely warm and all this strange ice activity doesn't seem that odd.

2.0 seismic reading doesn't mean much, barely feel anything at that level and everyone who has been on the ice/around it at times like this knows how much you can feel the ice so 2.0 could have easily been caused by the ice/freezing(hence why the authorities aren't sure if it was an earthquake or ice quake).

Very strange and interesting event though. I am curious to know what will happen once spring comes around(I am guessing it will settle back into place like the heaves etc do).

Same thing on Calling yesterday. Ice was extremely active cracking and popping all day. At times I had never felt the ice surface shake like that before. I figured it was the drastic 30 degree swing in temperature that was causing all the commotion. Fishing was dead save for morning and evening.

Default Earth quake at Alberta beach and sounds on the ice

There were lots of people fishing at Ste Anne yesterday. The ice heaves (that I seen) were mostly on the east end near the town of Alberta Beach. Seemed to be about 3-4' tall and closer to shore. Lots of people driving on and fishing near Val Quentin and RR40. I don't know what the north shore looks like; didn't drive out that way.

I drove on at RR40 yesterday along with a few others and no issues (no large cracks, ice heaves etc)

Other large lakes get far worse ice cracks and heaves than what Ste Anne has right now....
