Ruger #1, what to do

So I have a Ruger #1 in 300wm I bought used thinking it would be my all around hunting rifle, but never really got used. It has a refinished stock, recoil pad upgrade, Moyer trigger and custom Gunworx bedding job. I also did what many will consider blasphemy and removed the sights and mounts in favour of a Near Mfg 1 piece picatinny replacement rail. Much more utility for me, and figured since it isn’t original, why not?

Now my question is, if you had hunting and/or tactical rifles in the following calibers, 22-250, 7-08, 7.62x39, 338/06, 308, 300wm, 338 snipetac, 458 socom and 416 ruger, what would you rebarrel the #1 to? I’m also thinking a Re chambering of the 7-08 to an AI version is in the books.

My only current thought is perhaps a 28 nosier with a break for a light, long range hunter? Please don’t say 6.5 creedmore...

6.5 creedmore... hands down best cartridge ever... lol. On a serious note you can’t go wrong with any of the 7mm Cartridges, the 28 nosler is a power house and the .280ai is one of my favourite cartridges ever. Whatever you choose sounds like you have one hell of a rifle.

If you want yo keep the same extractor, go with either a 264 Win Mag or 270WSM
If you don’t care about changing out the extractor , 6.5/284 or 260AI for long range plinkers - on RKS gain twist just because they work!

Was hoping you’d chime in Cat, thx. Buddy has a 6/284 that is quite the laser as well. Had a 280ai, loved it but sold it and all components, Any other ideas I am overlooking? Also considered something else that is somewhat obscure like a 9.3x62 or a 375 ruger also. So many options, but yes I think a gain twist is a great idea.

The 9.3x62?is popular these days and I have a few friends with the 375 Ruger and they really like them.
Also don’t forget the weird and wonderful stuff like the 22 Weatherby Rocket ,240 Weatherby , 257 Weatherby , or the 25/06

AAAAND you COULD always go crazy and chamber it in .......303 British!
Barnes builds a 150 grain bullet that is accurate in mine and Speer and Seirra among others are making accurate bullets.
You could get Ron Smith to cut the Bore for a.312 bilketvand go nuts with Woodleigh bullets as well!

I would put a 28' barrel on it chambered in 257wby.

Think out of the box, 7x75, 30R, 8x68, 350 or 450 Rigby, 318 WR, 333OKH, 375R 2-1/2, 40-65, 45-110? There are lots of choices, what would challenge you a bit and turn your crank?
One of the beauties of the falling blocks, is there are so many choices and almost no restrictions.

I see nothing between 22-250 and 7-08, you got everything else covered, I'd fill in the blank with a 6mm of some sort....maybe even a creedmore!

Why change it at all. Your 300 mag. is a great caliber for close or long work and practice. Take this one and shoot the barrel out of it practicing out to 1000 yards, then think about changing it over to something else. With a Ruger #1 I would likely go to a lighter kicking round and one that would do well with a 22 or so inch barrel. That way you could make a real nice stalking rifle out of it. Also, single shots make great varmint/gopher guns because the single loading is not a disadvantage.

My 2 cents for what it is worth.

Sort of agree something between the 22-250 and 7-08 makes the most sense. I mean, I do have 28 nosler does, but just don’t need that. One of the heavy 6’s? 6xc perhaps, something I don’t need a lot of brass prep for, with a shoulder that won’t have me training very 3 firings like my 22-260.
