An awful lot of big game was killed with the .30-06 including the big bears before everyone became affluent enough to own a rifle for every species of game they might hunt.

Default SE whitetails

I havn't taken anything bigger than 140 in the south and missed a nice 160 years ago.
I have never seen a honest monster WT in the southeast but have seen two honest 160-70. over 30 years. The big ones are in isolated pockets such as Cypress Hills or East of the Base. I have a friend that hunts every fall in the south east and packs in. Though he has never taken a monster from there he does see WT to about 170 ever fall but is never fortunate to take one (he knows what he is talking about)...
