Glad I didn't have to trek into the woods looking for a wounded Boar!!! Getting the beasts back to the hunt camp was the difficult part for a solo hunter!! Last night, back in Calgary we enjoyed pork medallions with apple slices drenched in whiskey!! This morning we had breakfast that included maple-drenched boar belly bacon.....delicious!! Fine eating animals. Good Luck!!
Congrats Pics?

Do it Aussie style, with a big knife!

Never shot one or hunted them back home. Here in NZ I've had the pleasure of chasing them around with dogs and using a knife! It's pure insanity. Giant adrenaline rush when those dogs bail and youre sprinting after them to grab a pig by the leg and stick it.

I'd post pics but I'm too lazy to figure out how.

Default hog hunt

I went hog hunting a few years back in Sask on a ranch near Battle River. It was awesome. I shot this beast with a 12 guage with SST slugs. Seriously, hogs this big require something large. The armour plate they have around their midsection is two inches thick, and thats under an inch of hide. I aimed for the shoulder and, as I was only 20 yards away and shaking like a leaf, I was lucky to hit it in the neck and jugular. The tusks were five inches long and it weighed 310 pounds. The hide and head weighed 150 alone. I shot a second one that was around 75 pounds that could have been taken with a .223 or .243.

I also went hunting for Boar in Sask (up near Cold Lake).

Three of us were hunting and the Boar were quite large (250 lbs +). These animals can be quite tough, aggressive and dangerous and they have a cartilage shield protecting their vitals.

My boar was shot with a 375 H&H (one shot instant kill).
Friend #1 was a two shot kill with a 375 H&H (probably didn't need the second shot, but better to safe than sorry).
Friend #2 was a two shot kill with a 30-06 (did run, bed up and likely the second shot did help).

Just like any game animal it depends on shot placement, size/skin of the game, and distance.

Larger caliber's leave a little more room for error. As Craig Boddington said "anyone who hasn't wounded and lost an animal, hasn't hunted enough or is a liar".

Boar are taken with 223 and 7.62x39 in the USA and Australia, however often these are smaller or mid-size boars. And yes, some people even use spears.

Use common sense and be comfortable with your rifle. Quite often the ranges are quite small < 50 yards.

Yup use 22 LR for those two.... Those are European Wild Boar not Texas Wild Pigs...

First one was 264 lbs after gutting and second 254... so about 400 lbs live weight. Both harvested in Poland by my friend.

Default Wild boars

I shot two a couple of weeks with a 22 mag right behind the ear both dropped in their tracks. Took them to the butcher see what they will taste like. One was 200 lbs the other about 90

I would use a stronger caliber. However no one, not fish or wildlife is letting know hunters where we can go to get one. They claimed they failed in their efforts to control the population but is like a secret thing. No one can tell me were what WMU I should focus to hunt any of those wild boards.

Piekne swinki.

Golden triangle. From Edson to Wabamun and then up and near Barrhead. We found them by accident just quadding around. My uncle has shot some up near Smoky lake but good luck getting permission; the Ukrainians keep the pigs to themselves

I hunted there in 2011, Earl has a nice setup there.

I used an equinox excalibur cross bow, shot it at 47 yards, as others have mention, they are tough as nails, I waited for the boar to step forward to expose the vital areas, and poked the bolt behind the front leg. There was almost an inch of gristle, like armour plating!.

The boar took off on a death run after the shot for about 100 yards, and stopped when it collided with a big popular tree!

Taken three with my 6-284 pushing a little 100gr hornady.....right behind the ear on two and neck/spine the last one.
All dropped right where they stood, 40 yards closest one and 90 yards was the longest shot.
They are tough critters but shot placement and dead is dead.
Son uses his 7-08 140 partitions and he punched clean through, bugger squelled and ran fell over 60 yards....like a rocket!
