Default An Old Bighorn mount

I am not a sheep hunter but thought this old mount was worth sharing. A senior friend inherited this bighorn mount 50 years ago and at that time it was an old mount. The mount is probably from around 1920. The ears are really tired and bald on top. The dust on and in the cape is probably 80 years old.

Could a person age the ram using the pictures? Also wondering if it would be worth my friend getting a new cape and if a taxidermist would even have a cape? Are mature rams always broomed ? It would be nice if it wasn't broomed. I'm guessing the ram would score pretty good. Pretty heavy bases. Any guesses?
I will rough measure it next time I visit my friend.

You would want this old dusty varmint bitten thing? I thought he should cut up the horns to use them for backgammon pieces.

My friend inherited it back in the 60's and he said the ears were tired and hairless back then. The old timer that left it to him from shot it 40 or more years earlier.

Personally I'd leave it looking rugged and rough.. it's over 100 years old. There's beauty to appreciate in that.

I'd leave it alone. Maybe take it to a taxidermist and have it cleaned up. That is one tight curl. My guess is 12 -13 years old. Beauty of a sheep.

Brooming is where the ends or tips of the horns have been worn off and no longer pointed.

Thanks for the feedback folks. I will be seeing what my friend is going to do with it. Renew it or leave it as is.

I think the worn look adds to the story of the animal.
No different that old antiques that carry more value by actually looking their age vs. polishing them up.

Call me old fashioned, but it's a bit of history, leave it that way. Proviso is, they used arsenic for preservative long ago, might be a reason to redo it.

All he has to do is to resist the urge of licking the ram. I highly doubt that there would be any "airborne" arsenic emanating from a hundred year old mount.

I'd keep it in it's current condition if it were mine. You can always vacuum the dust out of it. Glue some of your personal hair onto the ears and presto!

My guess on where it would have been shot is Alberta but it may have been shot in BC too. I can find out more about the story behind the ram if my friend knows.

I don't know that he would or could sell it. Registering it and waiting 3 years would most likely be the only way to sell it. I wonder what a ram like this would be worth in a fair bidding situation? I doubt they come on the market very often.

I would clean it and leave it as others have suggested. A big part of its appeal to me is the age and history - treat it as you would any other rare antique.

Also, I think that aesthetically those well worn horns match the worn original cape extremely well and that would be lost forever. ( I am a bit romantic about these things)

Not many get to live that long these days. Hunting meant just that in the days of few roads, poor access and little interest in trophy hunting.

That's a stud of a ram! Do you happen to have a picture from the front so we can see the overall width and flare of the horns?

Although I agree that it would be awesome to keep as is for the historical perspective, I think it would be an unreal mount to have it redone with a big ol' roman nose and fresh cape.

If it is that old or older chances are it may have been taken around banff or Jasper. I am sure Jack O Conner even had his glass on him back in the day.

Might want to get him Measured and get him in a record book if not already in .

Default sheep

I would bet it was also shot with a lever action 30-30 or 32 special, needed to get close though.
