Slingshot ammo...
Trying to think of something my kids can shoot out of their slingshots that wouldn't do a lot of damage if they hit something "by accident". Any thoughts?

You can start off safe, but sooner or later that boy is going to start thinking along the lines of Nester....I know I did!
I'd also like to add dog food, pennies, rocks, 3/8 nuts. My old man would have had a fit back then if he knew what my cousins and I were up to.

Yeah I'm sure it'll get interesting, but I'm gonna start them off with something "safe". We'll see where it goes from there!

What I used
Alder berrys, very plentiful in NB, green crab apples, rocks, and anything else that wasn't squishy and would fit in the pouch.

Don't forget the joys of a good blow-gun using dried peas or similar spherical bits. I think tapioca worked well too.
Peanuts. Things that explode are nice as well. Check the bulk bins at Superstore for biodegradable ammo that will also feed the neighborhood critters.

If its safe they will lose interest right away.....'cause safe means it won't be the right size or the right weight......and won't fly with any pizazzzzzzzzzz.............hence losing interest. Some of those safe things mentioned above.....not so safe.........a hazel nut is on the large side but I would know it if I got hit by one lol.

It's a bit of a hijack, but I'll ask anyways: how many of you used metal garbage can lids like roman gladiator shields during crabapple fights?

We used to buy those bog bags of marbles for a buck.
It was cheaper than the steel ammo.
They worked great but...they wouldn't meet the non-damaging requirement.

teach them right from the start that even a slingshot is a weapon and there is nothing safe abuot it teach them to respect it and how to use it safely and show them that its deadly if used properly. its a good of tool to start weapons safety training as any. kids will do stupid things when your not around so don't encurage it

slingshot
I got my first grouse with a slingshot and my first rabbit come to think about it. Great fun and you just need to teach them to not hit things they don't want to destroy.

Thanks for the advise guys, the kids know all about weapons safety, just trying to come up with an idea that we can play with and not have to worry about "accidents". We have glass shot to shoot at things they want to kill, but was looking for something to play with while we're out camping in places that would frown on the destruction of things! Hope you all have a great long weekend, check your areas to find out about fire ban! Friday just can't get here fast enough!

Try setting up some targets, or clay skeets or whatever they are and using ball bearings in an area they couldn't be overshot! It is always fun destroying things and having to be accurate to do it!

we weren't that bright. Still remember one guy hitting his little brother in the back of a head with a crabapple. Apple exploded and it was a smack flop; took him right off his feet.
As for the slingshot: I'd use real ammo and teach them what's safe to shoot at when you're there and when you're not, they get shelled peanuts. Can't do much damage with those.

Brother and I used to use wild cucumbers.... at each other...
Or else you can also use paintballs....just have to hold sling diffrent...thumb under and two fingers over top of basket... keeps ball from being squished....
We used to do this too.. until my bro decided to toss his in freezer...F'n Ow!...

In Ontario back in the day we would hunt the railway tracks and loading docks by the canals for the tactonite pellets. They were like little marbles, not perfectly round but round enough. They were all over. They were used for the steel mills in Hamilton to they were plentiful and cost nothing. Mabey not so relevant here.

Superballs. We bounced them off the street and into low orbit. Also fun in the basement.
Right up until someone gets a superball in the eye at Mach 2.

Oh yeah.......best free slingshot ammo around. I use to pick it up by the bucket full from railway tracks around Trenton ON.
