Default Boat Motor Question?

My son in law has an older evinrude 115 boat motor. He had it in the shop to have the carbs cleaned.
The motor was stalling when he would slow down from speed to idle. I would start up right away.

Now that it is back from the mechanic, when he goes to start off, when he gives it throttle, the motor requires him to give it choke. So to pull a knee board he cant really just hit the throttle and go.

Any ideas on what may cause this?

THanks

Sounds a dang lot like a clogged jet in Carb(Pilot jet).
Could try thee ol seafoam first.

Sounds like a plugged low speed jet in the carb. Had the same issue in my small outboard. Ran like a top at higher speeds but stalled at troll speed and needed choke to start after every stall. Drove me nuts figuring out. The low speed jet tends to have a small orifice that is more prone to plugging and harder to get unplugged. In my case the orifice wasn't much bigger than a hair but I'm sure its bigger on a 115 which should help. Cleaner soak may work but if its a non-organic piece of junk that won't dissolve then next solution is probably running the carb in an ultrasonic cleaner to shake the debris loose. Replacing the jet via a rebuild kit may be the best bet. Start fresh with a rebuilt carb and make sure you add a real good fuel filter before using again. A grain of sand sized debris could have you in the same situation all over again.

Good luck

Hmmmm went through this just a few weeks ago....new gas, primer ball, jets, carb, fuel pump....what it was is the engine ran fine on full throttle, needed the choke to start and for the most part maintain idle then stop...engine was overheating....yup a little bit of water indicated that the water pump impeller was fine but was not enough at low speeds so I dropped the lower leg, removed the pump cover and yup one good impeller blade and the rest rounded off....replaced with new and all is fine now....I got a bunch of spare parts for future repairs.....check the water pump impeller....good luck.

Take it back to the mechanic, sounds like a set-up issue.

Impellers rot away and when you winterize a boat you should pull out the impeller and rub Vaseline on it then install it again. Stops it from drying out every winter, that’s what I used to do when I winterized the Nautique. Little harder on an outboard but can save your day from being stranded or over heating your engine.

Sorry, to fix your curiosity the answer is, I do not Know, LOL, They have had to work a lot of OT covering holidays at a plant site and other life events that they have not been able to us it since I asked.

Driving my curiosity crazy also, I guess next summer now most likely.

A few years ago I bought an outboard and it had some problems. The gas had gone stale so I replaced it. The new fuel got a dose of sea foam. I made a setup so I could start it in my yard. I was working a shutdown at the time so I had the time to play in the yard and not enough time to take the boat out.

After a bit of this, I got some time to go out and the problem had cleared up.
